National Science Day 2026 was special for us at Akshara Foundation.

The Maths Resource Team had the opportunity to participate in the National Science Day celebrations hosted by IIT Alumni Centre, Bengaluru (IITACB), and Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

We set up a vibrant stall showcasing the full range of Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA)'s teaching learning materials. From activity-based learning tools to classroom-ready teaching aids, the response from educators, researchers, and students was heartening — especially the curiosity around how structured math materials can transform government school classrooms at scale.

Pushpa Thantry, Director – Programmes, represented Akshara on the Mathematics Panel. She spoke about scaling numeracy through system partnerships, the importance of measurement, and how data-driven programme design strengthens classroom practice.

Science Day is a reminder that inquiry begins early. And that is exactly what we reinforced - how foundational numeracy can be joyful, rigorous, and deeply engaging.

Who says data collection has to be drab?

When a child lines up ten blue counters and seven red ones, she isn’t just counting — she is comparing.

When he colours a taller bar, he isn’t just drawing — he is interpreting.

When they debate whose column is bigger, they are analysing.

With the way, data stops being abstract. It becomes playful. It becomes participatory. It becomes powerful.

And this is how Measurement becomes joyful - when children see data, touch it, build it and question it.

Akshara Foundation’s flagship initiative, Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA), has been named a Runner-Up for the Math Power! Prize, presented by Alliance

To say the least, we are thrilled!
This recognition affirms a belief we hold close: every child can experience the joy of mathematics when learning is made meaningful, hands-on, and inclusive.

What began in 2010 as a small pilot has grown into a statewide movement in partnership with the Government of Karnataka, reaching thousands of schools and empowering teachers with tools and training to build strong foundational numeracy.

We are deeply grateful to our educators - teachers, headmasters, BEOs, CRPs and other stakeholders alike, who bring GKA to life every single day. This honour belongs to every single one of you.

Oh the excitement and gratitude! Thank you mEducation Alliance for this recognition.

💥 Akshara Foundation is thrilled to launch the Building Blocks Art Competition 2025, this !

Calling all young government-school-going creators (grades1-8) to imagine a cool new character — a hero, an animal, or who knows, maybe even a flying bag! 😄

The most creative entry will be featured as a character in a new game on Building Blocks – the maths learning app which supports foundational numeracy for early learners.

We invite all our well-wishers to share this opportunity with your networks, NGO partners, schools, and community groups so that more children can participate.

📅 Last date for submissions: December 31, 2025
🖍️ Details: akshara.org.in

Together, let’s inspire young learners to imagine, create, and learn through play.

Thank you Mavenir for supporting this exciting new initiative!

Every lesson taught is backed by hours of unseen effort. What you see is a lesson. What you don’t see is the many hours of planning and preparation that went into it.

This Teachers’ Day, Akshara Foundation salutes the teachers who do their homework towards shaping children’s futures with love and persistence, every single day.

Drop a ❤️ for a teacher who changed your life!

P.S. This footage is from a marathon 12-day shoot towards creating videos that will empower teachers with better teaching-learning content for GKA.

Things that make our day!

Finding different ways of recreating materials from the Ganitha Kalika Andolana maths kit - seen here is the Number line, made entirely from mud.

- Keonjhar, Odisha

This is a classic example to demonstrate the sustainability of a programme, to ensure nothing stops the child's learning progress.

The new academic year has taken off, and how! You know that the flagship maths learning movement - Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA) has been extended to impact children in grades 6-8.

To get that ball rolling, we have spent the last few weeks successfully training over 190 Resource Persons across Kalaburagi, Bengaluru, and Mysuru divisions, wrapping up the first round of RP training for Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA) 2.0. The energy, commitment, and curiosity they brought into the many peer learning and concrete experiences was very encouraging and we can't wait to see this extend to the children in the classrooms.

A big thank you to all our partners, trainers, and the incredible RPs who are now ready to take this forward. Next stop: district-level rollouts and classroom transformation!

New Study Alert!
We have had this one brewing for a while. So excited we finally get to share it with you all.

It has been a decade of transforming how children in government schools across Karnataka and Odisha learn maths with Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA).

Professor Trilochan Sastry, IIM Bangalore, did a deep dive into the full story of how is building a generation of students confident in maths. He did an independent study that traces the evolution of Ganitha Kalika Andolana (GKA) — Akshara Foundation’s pioneering Mathematics Learning Movement.

GKA is an innovation of Akshara Foundation and is implemented by the State governments of Karnataka and Odisha. It is proof that when governments, communities, and civil society come together, foundational learning can be revolutionized.

The impact of GKA has to be evaluated both in terms of “has GKA improved the enabling environment” and, also on the performance of children in maths.

Read the study to know whether GKA has succeeded on both accounts:https://akshara.org.in/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IIM-Bangalore-Paper-on-Akshara-Foundations-Math-Program-GKA-for-government-schools.pdf
