Sign this petition today to show your opposition to Karnataka government’s proposal to make IT employees work more than 14 hours per day!

Increased use of automation and AI in the IT industry is supposed to reduce work hours, thereby providing sufficient time to employees to indulge in creative activities and more personal time. However, AI is being used as an excuse to layoff employees and increase their working hours to more than 14 hours a day.

'Deccan Herald' report on how the Karnataka government’s proposal lobbied by the IT industry owners will especially affect women. Women’s participation in the workforce especially in the IT sector comes with range of roadblocks present in patriarchal society. This also extends to the discrimination faced by the q***r community and other marginalised sections of society.

AIITEU’s condemns this move by the Karnataka Govt to increase working hours of IT/ITES/BPO employees to 14 hours a day. With increasing automation, working hours must be reduced to allow time for more personal, innovative work, and a holistic life.

Therefore, our demand that working hours be reduced to 7 and minimum wage of Rs. 26,000 in the IT/ITeS/BPO sector. We also condemn the government’s statement that 14 hours would be applied to the manufacturing sector. We are in solidarity with all workers against inhuman exploitation.

AIITEU Condemns Karnataka Government’s Proposal to Extend Working Hours in IT/ITeS Sector

The All India IT and ITeS Employees’ Union (AIITEU) strongly condemns the proposed change in Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act aiming to increase the working hours of IT employees to over 12 hours a day as reported by different media outlets.

We urge all the tech workers to unitedly raise their voice against the anti-worker proposals being considered by Karnataka State Government. AIITEU also demands upon the Karnataka Govt. to:
1. Refrain from any such amendment which is totally against the workers’ basic rights.
2. Reduce the daily working hours to *7 hours* and the workweek to *35 hours* to ensure higher employment with a defined right to logout of work.
3. Ensure a *minimum wage* of *Rs. 26000* for the workers in IT and ITeS sector.

The existing Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act largely defines that “no employee in any establishment shall be required or allowed to work for more than nine hours on any day and forty-eight hours in any week”. Even in the case of overtime, “the total number of hours of work including overtime shall not exceed ten hours” and “does not exceed fifty [overtime hours] in a period of three continuous months”.

AIITEU strongly opposes any move by the state government to increase the daily working hours in favour of the capitalist owners.

IT companies have been consistently violating the labour laws by not paying the due wages for overtime work. AIITEU strongly opposes the consistent onslaught on workers' rights by the capitalist classes who are facing a systematic crisis wherein the only way to safeguard profits and wealth is through intensifying the exploitation of their workers.

AIITEU Condemns Karnataka Government’s Proposal to Extend Working Hours in IT/ITeS Sector

The All India IT and ITeS Employees’ Union (AIITEU) strongly condemns the proposed change in Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act aiming to increase the working hours of IT employees to over 12 hours a day as reported by different media outlets.

AIITEU strongly opposes any move by the state government to increase the daily working hours in favour of the capitalist owners. Increased use of automation in the IT industry is supposed to reduce work hours, thereby providing sufficient time to the workers to indulge in creative activities and leisure. This in turn, is expected to increase their productivity. However, the proposal to increase the working hours will not only be counter-productive but also rob the workers of their basic right to live.

IT companies have been consistently violating the labour laws by not paying the due wages for overtime work. AIITEU strongly opposes the consistent onslaught on workers' rights by the capitalist classes who are facing a systematic crisis wherein the only way to safeguard profits and wealth is through intensifying the exploitation of their workers.

AIITEU also demands a formulation of regulation by the state government to conduct periodic inspections of IT companies in order to verify compliance with the existing Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act as well as other related acts.

Celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, India's first labor minister and champion of workers' rights!

Babasaheb Ambedkar saw that the workers have the two enemies of brahminism and capitalism. Brahminism, not being merely the previliges and interests of one community but the "negation of the spirit of liberty, equality, and fraternity". He fought for the most oppressed among the workers and emphasized the need for uniting them across caste and religion.

He fought to reduce working hours from 14 to 8 and crafted crucial legislation on trade unions, maternity benefits, and factories. Dr. Ambedkar believed capitalism was a form of dictatorship of the employers and the workers must become the ruling class. Let's honor his vision for a fair and just society by safeguard our constitution which is under attack!
