🧠 Understanding Attachment Styles: How Our Early Relationships Shape Us

How do our childhood experiences influence the way we build relationships as adults?

At Aweksha - A Women’s Trust’s recent Survivor Support Group meeting, participants explored the concept of attachment styles in an interactive session led by Dr. Sowmya from Muktha Foundation.

Through thought-provoking activities and discussions, participants reflected on how childhood experiences with primary caregivers can shape confidence, relationships, responses to authority, and emotional well-being.

💡 The session explored:
🔹 John Bowlby’s theory of attachment and the importance of a safe haven and secure base in childhood.
🔹 Mary Ainsworth’s “Strange Situation” experiment, which introduced the concepts of secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment styles.
🔹 Harry Harlow’s landmark experiments highlighting that love, warmth, and comfort are as essential as physical care.
🔹 René Spitz’s research demonstrating the profound emotional and developmental impact of caregiver affection and stimulation.

A key takeaway from the session was that while our early experiences influence us, they do not define us. With awareness, support, and healing, growth and change are always possible.

The session concluded with an engaging discussion on how attachment styles influence relationships and everyday interactions, leaving participants with valuable insights into themselves and others.

Aweksha - A Women’s Trust recently conducted an orientation for the first-year Master of Social Work (MSW) students at St. Joseph’s University, at the invitation of Dr. Roonaq un Nisa, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work.

Facilitated by Donna Fernandes, Shreya S and Sushmitha, the session introduced students to Aweksha’s work and explored the history of the women’s movement in India, feminist politics, the legal framework addressing violence against women, and the importance of understanding gender-based violence through a structural lens. The team also shared insights from Aweksha’s work with burn survivors at Victoria Hospital and KR Hospital.

The orientation concluded with an interactive discussion, where students raised questions on feminism, gender-based violence and men’s experiences. The conversation provided an opportunity to address common misconceptions about feminism and highlight its role in challenging unequal power structures and advancing justice and dignity for all.

The discussion also underscored the continued need for gender sensitisation and critical engagement with concepts such as power, privilege and structural inequality—especially within social work education. As future practitioners, developing a nuanced understanding of these issues is essential to delivering empathetic, rights-based and survivor-centred support.

We thank Dr. Roonaq un Nisa, the School of Social Work, and the students of St. Joseph’s University for their participation and engagement.

The first response to a survivor can shape their path to safety and healing.

Aweksha recently organised a workshop on Psychological First Aid (PFA), facilitated by Dr. Madhuri, Assistant Professor at NIMHANS, Bangalore, bringing together civil society organisations, government professionals, and survivors.

Through discussions, case studies, video analysis, and group exercises, participants explored practical ways to provide immediate, compassionate support to survivors of gender-based violence.

A key focus of the workshop was the WHO-recommended LIVES approach, which equips frontline responders to:
👂 Listen without judgement.
💬 Inquire about survivors’ needs and concerns.
🤝 Validate their experiences and feelings.
🛡️ Enhance safety through practical safety planning.
🤲 Support survivors in identifying trusted people, services, and resources.

At Aweksha, we believe that strengthening frontline responses begins with strengthening the people behind them. Through capacity-building initiatives like these, we continue to build systems where every survivor is met with empathy, dignity, and informed support.

Art as resistance. Art as memory. Art as voice.

On 8th March, Aweksha marked the beginning of Women’s History Month with a one-day art exhibition, inaugurated by Smt Sowmya Reddy—politician, environmentalist, social worker, and Karnataka President, All India Mahila Congress.

The space brought together feminist artists, conversations, and collective reflection—reminding us that art is not just expression, but a powerful form of testimony and resistance.

Celebrating the pioneer who paved the way, today on her birth anniversary, we remember Savitribai Phule—India’s first female teacher and the Mother of Indian Feminism.
