Leadership Talks | Building Depth in Education Leadership

Education remains one of the most powerful drivers of transformation. Strengthening this focus requires leadership that brings both depth and a systems perspective.

This month marks the onboarding of Mallik as Director – Programs.

With over two decades of experience, his approach brings together program implementation, research, advocacy, and institution building. From grassroots engagement to systemic change, the emphasis is clear — impact must go beyond isolated efforts and translate into sustainable, large-scale transformation.

As we step into the new financial year, the focus sharpens on building impact across individual, institutional, and regional levels — through stronger programs, partnerships, and ex*****on.

Welcoming Mallik to the journey of driving meaningful, long-term change.

AL Speaks | Beyond Charity: The Meaning of Giving

At a recent session hosted by Sonata, the theme “Give to Gain” opened up an important reflection on inclusion — especially in the context of children with visual impairment and workplaces.

Giving, when seen beyond charity, becomes something far more powerful. It is not about a one-way act between a giver and a receiver. It is about creating shared value — through time, listening, knowledge, space, and opportunity.

In workplaces, inclusion begins with this very act. Each individual brings their own story, their own need to be heard and understood. When we create space for that, we build environments where everyone belongs.

Inclusion is not limited to a few. It is a shared human need.

And perhaps that is what “giving” truly does — it strengthens not just others, but also our own sense of purpose, well-being, and connection.

Scalability is expected. Sustainability is assumed.

But what does sustainability really mean in the context of social programs?

In many cases, it is defined as the ability of a program to continue even after the non-profit exits. While this sounds ideal, the ground reality — especially in education and skill development — is far more complex.

Infrastructure needs maintenance. Trained individuals may move on. Systems often lack the resources to carry forward what was built.

In such contexts, sustainability is not just about exit readiness. It is about continuous engagement, ecosystem support, and long-term commitment.

Perhaps it is time to rethink sustainability — not as withdrawal, but as responsibility that evolves.

Appearances are not just personal — they are shaped by years of collective belief.

Over time, society builds fixed images of how certain identities should “look,” and disability is no exception. These assumptions become so normalized that they start to feel like facts.

But reality is changing.

From fashion to retail spaces, there is a growing need to recognize persons with disabilities as active participants — with choices, preferences, and identities that go far beyond stereotypes. Accessibility is not limited to infrastructure; it extends to how people engage with everyday experiences like clothing, grooming, and self-expression.

Breaking the perception of “how a person with disability should appear” begins with access, exposure, and intent.

A recent survey across 13 schools in Kerala revealed a significant gap in access to assistive technology for students with visual impairment.

Critical tools that support Braille learning and accessible reading are largely unavailable — directly impacting learning outcomes and classroom engagement.

The next step is focused action.

Efforts are underway to partner with public and private stakeholders to support capital investments in assistive devices, with an initial plan to deploy them across 9 schools.

Enabling access to Braille and learning tools is not just support — it is essential to equitable education.

Expanding access to inclusive swimming continues to bring both progress and practical challenges.

A portable pool has been acquired and is planned for installation in Kerala. However, safety considerations at the identified school have led to a re-evaluation. Alternative models are now being explored — including placing the pool within inclusive school environments to ensure both safety and shared access.

At the same time, EquiFloat is being expanded beyond Pune to Mumbai and Nagpur, with strong support from partners and volunteers. These efforts are aimed at widening reach while maintaining quality of training.

Collaborations are also underway with national institutions to strengthen disability sports. While some activities are currently on hold due to infrastructure readiness, they are expected to gain momentum in the coming cycle.

Building inclusive ecosystems often requires adapting on the ground — but each step forward strengthens the pathway.

Kreedotsava in Karnataka took a more focused turn this year.

Instead of a large, centralized event, the effort moved closer to the ground — with district-level participation in Tumkur and Kunigal. The response was strong, with enthusiastic participation from students with visual impairment.

This shift is intentional.

Distributing platforms closer to communities enables stronger participation, improved access, and more effective early identification and nurturing of talent — across swimming and a broader spectrum of sports.

Sometimes, impact grows stronger when it moves closer to where people are.
