✨ ASYV Alumni Spotlight! ✨

Eugene Harerimana (ASYV Class of 2017) is helping shape Rwanda's environmental future. He works with GIZ Rwanda-Burundi, supporting the Ministry of Environment and the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) on climate policy, green economy development, and peatland conservation. Through this work, Eugene is advancing sustainable environmental management and strengthening the country's climate resilience.
Beyond his work at GIZ, Eugene is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Project Management to further sharpen his leadership and project implementation skills.

In his own words, Eugene reflects on the foundation ASYV gave him:

"ASYV prepared me in many ways beyond academics. It taught me leadership, responsibility, teamwork, resilience, and service to others. The Village encouraged us to become problem-solvers and lifelong learners, qualities that I rely on every day in my work. It also taught me to believe that no matter where you come from, you can make a meaningful impact if you are willing to work hard and remain committed to your goals. Never let your background define your future. Stay curious, work hard, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone."

Eugene recently returned to ASYV for a visit — this time with his wife, daughter, and a GIZ colleague, sharing the Village that shaped him with some of the people closest to him.

Thank you, Eugene, for building a more sustainable future for Rwanda, and for coming back to visit your ASYV family!

⚠️ Important Notice from Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village

We’ve become aware of student registration forms circulating online that use ASYV’s name and branding without our knowledge or approval.

These forms are not from ASYV. We ask that you do not fill them out, share personal information, send any payment, or engage with anyone distributing them.

We’ve reported this matter to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) and are working with authorities to investigate.

We were thrilled to have ASYV student Irakoze Sarah Divine and ASYV Student Life Director Brenda Iraba represent Rwanda at the Youth Ambassadors Africa Programme (YA-Africa), a youth leadership and cultural exchange initiative of the U.S. Department of State that brought together high school students and adult participants from across Africa for a program in the United States this July.

Rwanda’s delegation included seven representatives from three schools: Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (represented by Sarah and Brenda), SOS Children's Villages Rwanda, and Rwanda Coding Academy.

We’re so proud that Sarah and Brenda had the opportunity to represent both ASYV and Rwanda on this international stage, and we can’t wait to see how they apply their experience to their leadership at the Village.

On July 18th, ASYV students performed at Kigali’s Ubumuntu Arts Festival. In celebration of the theme, “Embracing Time: Holding on Together” our students prepared and delivered an original musical theater performance.

Ntwarili Kevin, president of student government and one of the performers, shared:
“Standing on the stage at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival was more than a performance; it was an opportunity to share our story with the world. Every rehearsal, every step, and every moment reminded me that art has the power to bring people and communities together. I am deeply grateful to ASYV for believing in us, nurturing our talents, and giving us the confidence to express who we are. This experience has inspired me to continue using my voice and creativity to make a positive difference.”

Thank you to Ubumuntu for including ASYV in this beautiful celebration of humanity! 🎭

We are proud to share that four ASYV big siblings have or will soon be starting at universities around the globe! Big siblings serve in intern capacities each year, and mentor current students.

Teta Deborah Lesly Butati worked as an intern in our Career Resource Center and will now be attending Seton Hill University in the fall.

Also attending Seton Hill University is Uwimpuhwe Belyse, who worked at ASYV as a media intern.

Ruth Kayitesi stayed at ASYV as an academic advisor for humanities and is now attending Kepler College.

Mukamarakiza Felicien interned at ASYV as an academic advisor for mathematics and programming. He recently started studying at The African Leadership University.

Congratulations to all our big siblings as they take this next step in their educational journey! And to every big sibling who has given a year (or more!) to mentor and guide our students, thank you. You are a true inspiration to your younger siblings!

ASYV was so fortunate to have many amazing visitors from all over the world come to these past few months.

📚 Several different groups of educators and youth village leaders from - Village Way Educational Initiatives in Israel came to ASYV to learn about our unique education model.

🎓 We were thrilled to welcome many visitors to witness the graduation of the class of 2026 including board members and former cousins.

💙 Students from in Israel came to ASYV to interact with our students and learn about life in the Village.

🤝We welcomed back for a meaningful tour with their staff.

⚽ 🃏 in Rwanda spent a night at ASYV doing fun games and activities with our students.

Thank you to all our incredible visitors for bringing their energy and enthusiasm to the Village. We can’t wait to welcome you back soon!
