Meet Vikram!
His life will feel familiar to many of us: a full week of work, good music on the commute, a film saved for the weekend, and the constant urge to swap the city life for a beach or a forest trail.
Beyond the extra-curriculars of life, Vikram’s heart has always beaten in sync with the community dogs around him. Whether it was during his college days, a work transfer, or a new home, Vikram always found a local pack to love along with his wife - Ramya.
Then came May 2021. And PATTANI. 🐾
Pattani arrived as a foster, along with his brother Murphy, for 2 weeks. Pattani initially was unsure of the world he had just entered. He never barked or wagged his tail; he simply observed as if deciding whether it was safe to belong there. While Murphy got adopted in the process, Pattani eventually found his happily ever after in Vikram’s and Ramya’s home.
When they began training Pattani, they found most trainers to be obedience-oriented, focusing on making the pet sit, stand, or roll on commands. Ramya and Vikram did not share this view and believed that pets and animals, just like us, have their own moods and personalities, and in no way are they obliged to obey us. So, the couple relocated to Bangalore for 4 months (imagine!) just to find the right training for Pattani.
They used an integration-based approach to familiarise Pattani with her new home - think of it like a conversation between friends! The approach considers how a pet is feeling inside and what they need to feel safe. Instead of forcing them to obey, it uses kindness to build bond and trust with the pet parents, while being considerate to their quirks, personalities, and overall nature.
Living this way means loving every part of the pet, including the quirks. Like us, Pattani has his own quirks; he loves to destroy soft toys the second he gets them. To keep him happy, he now gets plenty of HUFT treats and tough, indestructible toys (always in yellow)! Pattani clearly knows how to use puppy eyes to his advantage.
"Since Pattani arrived, life has shifted in the most beautiful, unhurried way. It's meditative for us", Vikram says. And in learning his language and quirks: a nose boop ins
