" One Million Trees for Pir Panjal" – A People’s Movement Begins
A powerful step towards ecological restoration and climate resilience has been initiated in the Western Himalayas with the launch of “One Million Trees for Pir Panjal.”
Led by School for Rural Development and Environment in collaboration with Nature Conservancy Alliance and supported by the Forest Department J&K, this initiative goes beyond plantation—it is a community-driven movement to heal our fragile mountain ecosystems.
The first phase saw plantation drives at Ringzabal (Sukhnag Range, Budgam) and Heijen Brenwar (Doodganga Range), marking the beginning of an ambitious mission to plant 1 million trees across Pir Panjal.
As Dr. Shaikh Ghulam Rasool rightly said:
“This is not merely about planting trees; it is about healing our mountains.”
With growing ecological stress due to unregulated tourism and unsustainable development, this initiative calls for a shift towards community stewardship, ecological balance, and climate responsibility.
Encouragingly, the movement has witnessed strong participation from students, forest officials, civil society, and local communities—proving that real change begins collectively.
The message is clear:
Plant. Protect. Restore.
Let’s come together to ensure that Pir Panjal not only survives—but thrives.
