Every year, when the chants rise
“भारत माता की जय.”
“वंदे मातरम.”
Something within us stirs.
A feeling that is difficult to explain.
A lump in the throat.
Eyes that suddenly turn wet.
Because India is not merely the land we live in.
For many of us, she is माँ.
And yet, on this Independence Day, perhaps it is worth asking ourselves something deeper:
Who is truly free?
When a child cannot feel safe.
When a woman cannot feel safe.
When a man cannot feel safe.
When fear, anger, hatred, greed and insecurity continue to govern our choices
are we truly free?
We often measure freedom by what exists outside us.
The freedom to speak.
To choose.
To work.
To travel.
To build.
To dream.
But there is another freedom,
one that no constitution, government or circumstance can give us.
The freedom within.
Perhaps स्व - तंत्र begins with स्व (the very own self)
Knowing who we truly are.
Looking beyond the identities we have collected.
Going inward.
Understanding our own thoughts, emotions, fears and desires.
And discovering the self beneath them.
Because if we are still prisoners of our anger, ego, fear, hatred or greed,
how free are we, really?
A nation is made of its people.
And perhaps the next chapter of India's freedom is not only about how we protect the nation from what lies outside,
but how deeply we transform what lies within.
Independence was given to a nation.
Freedom is a journey within.
This Independence Day, may we not only celebrate the freedom India attained, may we begin discovering the freedom we are yet to attain within ourselves.
