A By 2030 Start With One Wetland.

A few years ago, this landscape was degraded by encroachment and unsustainable aquaculture.

Today, young mangroves are returning.

If one damaged wetland can recover, imagine what is possible across Odisha and India's eastern coastline.

That is the vision behind our mission:

🌱 One Million Mangroves by 2030

Not simply to plant trees, but to restore wetlands, strengthen coastlines, support biodiversity, and build climate resilience for future generations.

We invite everyone to become part of this journey. www.opsatrust.org

Because the future of our coastlines will depend on the choices we make today.

One Million Mangroves.
One Resilient Coastline.
One Shared Future.

World Environment Day 2026 | OPSA Trust, with the support of Hughes Systique Corporation (HSC), joined the global observance of World Environment Day 2026 at the Devi River Mouth, Odisha, under the global theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

Through a community-led mangrove plantation and coastal climate resilience initiative, we continue to work alongside wetland-dependent women, fisherfolk, youth, and local communities to conserve and restore mangrove ecosystems, strengthen environmental education, and promote community outreach for long-term climate resilience.

As one of nature's most effective solutions, mangroves help sequester carbon, safeguard coastlines from cyclones and storm surges, support biodiversity, and sustain local livelihoods.

This year's observance reaffirmed our shared commitment to nature-based solutions, demonstrating how collaborative action between communities and responsible partners can create meaningful environmental and social impact while building a more resilient future for coastal Odisha. Hughes Systique

Celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 at UNESCO recognized “Tsunami Ready” Village Keutajanga supported by Hughes Systique Corporation (HSC) through mangrove conservation and community sensitisation initiatives.

Aligned with this year’s global theme, “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” the initiative sensitised Keutajanga villagers — one of Odisha’s frontline coastal villages facing high risks of sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and future submergence among 74 vulnerable coastal villages identified through scientific assessments. The ecologically important Devi River Mouth landscape supports rich biodiversity including mangroves, Olive Ridley sea turtles, dolphins, migratory birds, wetlands, and traditional fishing-dependent communities.

Local fisherfolk artists and coastal children showcased traditional talents, conservation-themed art, and awareness performances highlighting the importance of mangroves as natural bio-shields protecting coastlines from cyclones, tidal surges, erosion, biodiversity loss, and climate change impacts while strengthening blue carbon ecosystems and long-term coastal resilience.

The initiative reflects how meaningful CSR partnerships and grassroots conservation can contribute toward globally relevant biodiversity protection, climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable coastal futures.

Odisha Paryavaran Sanrakshan Abhiyan - OPSA TRUST , with support from Hughes Systique Corporation, has initiated a community-led coastal resilience and mangrove conservation initiative at the Devi River Mouth, Odisha, along India’s climate-vulnerable east coast.

As climate-related coastal risks continue to intensify across India’s east coast, the initiative focuses on strengthening mangrove ecosystems through nature-based solutions, community participation, ecological awareness, capacity building, sustainable coastal livelihoods, and wetland stewardship.

Mangroves serve as critical natural infrastructure by protecting vulnerable coastal communities from cyclones, erosion, tidal surges, and climate-related disasters, while supporting biodiversity, fisheries, blue carbon ecosystems, and long-term oceanic health.

The Devi River Mouth remains globally significant for Olive Ridley sea turtle arribada nesting, migratory birds, estuarine biodiversity, and natural coastal protection along Odisha’s coastline.

This collaboration reflects the growing importance of responsible CSR engagement in advancing locally led conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable coastal futures for vulnerable communities.

We sincerely appreciate Hughes Systique Pvt. Ltd. for supporting community-driven environmental stewardship and long-term ecosystem resilience along India’s east coast.

🔥 Heatwaves are no longer just a season—they are becoming a harsh reality for our communities. From homes to fields, rising temperatures are affecting lives every single day.

But what if the answer is not only about cooling ourselves, but also about healing the planet?

🌱 This Earth Day, let us remember that nature already holds the solutions.

Mangroves are among nature’s strongest climate protectors. They:
✔ Absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide
✔ Help regulate local climate and temperature
✔ Protect coastal communities from cyclones, floods, and extreme weather

Their roots may grow along the coast, but their impact goes far beyond—supporting the balance of the climate we all depend on.

Every single day, marginalized community members who depend on rivers for crab and fish collection are now leading mangrove conservation efforts. The plantation sites are far from human habitation, yet they cross rivers daily to monitor, protect, and safeguard both planted and natural mangroves.

👩‍🌾 Through our Women for Mangroves movement, women are emerging as frontline climate leaders—planting, protecting, and nurturing these green lifelines with immense dedication and care.

So far, we have planted 45,000 mangrove saplings by following best practices in plantation, monitoring, and protection, resulting in higher survival rates. We are also currently nurturing 65,000 saplings for future plantation and restoration efforts.

🌍 Our vision is bold: Millions of Mangroves by 2030.

Each sapling planted today is a step towards a cooler, safer, and more climate-resilient tomorrow.

🌎 This Earth Day, let us not just celebrate nature—let us stand for it. Let us also recognise, support, and stand with the real climate leaders from our communities who are protecting our future every single day.

Soumya Ranjan Biswal, Founder Trustee, attended and spoke as a panel guest at the special discussion on “AI, Tradition and the Youth of Odisha” organised by Nirbhaya at Mayfair, Bhubaneswar.

During the discussion, he shared his thoughts on how artificial intelligence, tradition, environment and youth leadership can come together to build a stronger and more sustainable Odisha.

As someone deeply involved in community-led conservation, mangrove restoration, wetland protection and youth engagement, he highlighted the importance of using technology to strengthen local knowledge, community values and cultural identity.

The event was also an emotional moment as tribute was paid to the memory of Shri Manish Das, son of eminent media personality and Editor-in-Chief of Nirbhaya, Shri Naveen Das.

Receiving a warm welcome from Shri Naveen Das, one of Odisha’s most respected and fearless media personalities, made the occasion even more meaningful.

Two years ago, this stretch of the Devi River Mouth in Odisha held only uncertainty. Today, the here are growing strong—quietly becoming a lifeline for crab collectors and small-scale fishermen whose daily survival depends on healthy ecosystems.

This transformation did not happen through plantations alone. It emerged from a citizen-science–driven approach that reshaped community behaviour, turning local fishers, women from marginalized fisherfolk households, and Gram Panchayats into active custodians of mangrove ecosystems. When communities moved from being participants to leaders, conservation became a movement.

With collective effort, over 32,000 mangroves have been planted across coastal Gram Panchayats, achieving more than 90% survival—a rare outcome in dynamic coastal landscapes. What stands today is not just a restoration site, but a replicable, community-owned model linking ocean health, livelihoods, and climate resilience.🌱🌊

This is a moment for scale. We at Odisha Paryavaran Sanrakshan Abhiyan Trust invite philanthropists, CSR leaders, and global institutions to partner with us in strengthening oceanic health and expanding this people-led model towards a bold yet achievable goal—restoring one million mangroves by 2030.

Nature responds when communities lead. Now, impact can multiply with the right partners.
