What happens when AI reaches the grassroots?
For SM Zafar, a Community Content Creator from Arwal, Bihar, it became a practical tool for understanding government processes and taking action.
When Video Volunteers Founder Jessica Mayberry and Co-founder Stalin visited him, they spoke about how AI is changing the way Community Content Creators work.
For Zafar, that meant using AI to understand government schemes, learn how to navigate official processes, and even find information that helped him file a complaint about a water issue affecting his village.
This is what AI looks like at the grassroots, not replacing people, but helping them access information, understand their rights, and engage more confidently with public systems.
When information becomes easier to access, communities are better equipped to ask questions, seek accountability and advocate for change.

What happens when grassroots journalists gain access to AI?

They start asking better questions.
In Aurangabad district, Bihar, Community Content Creator Ajeet Kumar wants to use ChatGPT to research one of the biggest issues affecting his community—migration.
Across the Video Volunteers network, Community Content Creators are also exploring how AI can help them understand government schemes, disability benefits, the Right to Information (RTI) process, and public records before they begin reporting.
As Jessica Mayberry, Founder, Video Volunteers puts it community content creators working in communities where access to information is often limited, AI can become a starting point for research and learning.

CCs still verify information, speak to people, visit the ground, and hold institutions accountable.
AI helps them prepare. Communities help them report.

What if the biggest barrier to healthcare wasn't the hospital... but the language?
In Bihar, Community Content Creator Ajeet Kumar received a medical report of his son he couldn't understand. It wasn't because he couldn't read, it was because the report was written in technical English.
So he uploaded it to ChatGPT.
It translated the report into Hindi and explained what it meant.
Across India, Community Content Creators are finding practical ways to use AI to better understand medical reports, government schemes and public entitlements.
In this video, Video Volunteers Founder Jessica Mayberry explains how AI is helping bridge information gaps and making knowledge more accessible at the grassroots.

"Reservation hatao."

You've probably heard this.

But spend a day in a government school where Dalit children are still asked to sweep classrooms, clean toilets, or sit separately during the mid-day meal, and a different question emerges.

If caste no longer matters, why are children still being treated differently because of it?

For many Dalit students, discrimination begins in the classroom. It shapes where they sit, who they eat with, the work they are expected to do, and, for some, whether they stay in school at all.

This isn't history. It's a reality that Community Content Creators continue to document across India.

Reservation did not create caste discrimination.

It was introduced as an affirmative action to address inequalities created by a caste-based social order.

If we want a future where reservation is no longer needed, the starting point isn't abolishing reservation.

It's abolishing caste discrimination.

So the next time the question is, "Why reservation?"

Ask a better one:
