Centre of Resilience

Centre of Resilience Community skills & innovation centre for resilient futures based in Bihar, India & active globally.

Bihar, India, like many places in the world today, faces severe issues of economic instability, social marginalisation, unsustainable urbanisation, the disappearance of Indigenous cultures and ecological diversity, and increasingly extreme climactic conditions due to global climate change. However, Bihar still has a chance to shift to models of sustainable development and regenerative practices. A

the Centre of Resilience we work to address these intersecting issues on a regional scale by hiring and training low-income workers to earn a living in a way that regenerates the land, challenges social barriers and demonstrates the power of sustainable, accessible solutions. Focusing in hybrid waste-upcycling and natural design and construction, we incubate social entrepreneurs, drawing on global as well as local, Indigenous skills, knowledge and practices. OUR MISSION

Is to provide pathways towards resilient livelihood, sustainable living and inclusive wellbeing, and thus a regenerative future for the peoples, cultures and ecology of Bihar. OUR VISION

Is for Bihar to be a global model for resilient living and social, ecological regeneration.

We are the first generations who are witnessing the bad effects of Climate Change and We will be the last generation who could do something about it.
It’s a big challenge and we will have to join hand together to fight this issue.

Thanks PUNE PULSE for spreading the message. Centre of Resilience from Bihar is ready to collaborate with those who want to work together to find the solutions for our future generations. Ben Reid Howells, Andreas Mueller-Hermann , Koen Olthuis you have been supporting from far! Now it’s time for you guys to come to India. Waterstudio.NL

As predicted, 2022 has been a wild year, both globally and at the Centre, with record-breaking heat this past summer which made all the farming work at the Centre very hard, as well as increasingly unpredictable flooding hitting Bihar outside of the usual season and during peak farming season at the Centre. To respond to these very tangible forms of climate chaos, we put time and resources into raising the ground level around the centre once more. While we succeeded in preventing water from flooding the interior of the main centre and workshop areas, the farming was largely lost including some well established trees.

The only infrastructure that remained high and dry during this year’s floods was... the Floating House Prototype! A win to be sure! The small bamboo house on its floating platform in the Centre’s pond became the only shelter for different residents of the Centre, including mongoose, native water hens and a monitor lizard.

We are literally working on the front-line of climate chaos.

While these added challenges are hard on our small team and our very minimal resources, they also remind us of how urgent this work is, not only for Bihar but globally.

And despite these challenges 2022 has been a year of steady progress.

This year we successfully dealt with the Indian government to get certified as a Centre, and now are registered as a charitable, not-for- profit organisation, which means we can now receive Indian government funding and give tax benefits to donors within India. Our next step is now sorting international details.

We are also celebrating the launch of ArtiCulture Creations. This enterprise will aim to cover the running costs of the Centre once it is fully up and running.

Many thanks to those who contributed to the online crowdfunding campaign where we raised 2,000$ CAD to help launch this seed venture!

Looking back on our first 12 months as a Centre in 2021 I was amazed to see how much we accomplished on such a tiny budget: 17K euro for 1 year’s work, and 5K of that came out of Prashant’s pocket to keep the work going when funds were low. While we are currently looking for Core Funding, so we don’t have to spend time raising funds and can focus fully on the work itself of the Centre, it is thanks to Prashant’s ingenuity and our growing networks of solidarity and volunteers across Bihar that has allowed us to make such impact with so little resources. Grassroots work in its truest sense.

Many thanks to Andreas, and Koen and everyone else who has contributed to the Centre as we started out in this very first year of operations. We couldn’t have done the work we did without you.
