A L A N G A D Y O G A M
The history of Sabarimala is intrinsically linked historically and spiritually to the
two important ensemble of people viz the ALANGAD YOGAM AND THE
AMBALAPUZHA YOGAM.Eversince the Sabarimala pilgrimage began in its present
form these two spiritual groups have formed an indelible part of the culmination
of this holy pilgrimage.Both groups particularly the Alangad Yogam
have been
conferred special rights and priveliges by the Pandalam Royalty which stands to
this day as a personification of their blessedness in the Ayyappa cult. The origin of the Alangad Yogam dates back to the earthly advent of A***n Kerala
Varman whom we all adore and worship today as Lord Ayyappaswamy ,some
three and a half centuries ago.According to the late Dr S.K.Nair,who was head of
the department of Malayalam in the erstwhile University of Madras,Lord
Ayyappaswamy was born during the time when Madurai was ruled by Thirumalai
Nayak between 1600 and 1650 A.D. Dr.Nair,whose ancestors were part of the
Alangad Yogam,personally led by Lord Ayyappaswamy,had extensively researched
for nearly 15 years,before he authored his historical novel AYYAPPAN in
malayalam,published in 1960,hitherto out of print. The early part of the 17 th century was one of the most tumultuous in the history of
parts of modern day south Kerala and parts of southern Tamilnadu especially in
and around Tirunelveli and adjoining areas. Hordes of marauding brigands used to
make a swift appearance , terrorize little kingdoms and powerless fiefdoms and
decamp with the wealth thus amassed. Pandalam was at the receiving end of one
such forest brigand Udayanan who was based at,and, operated from Karimala
Fort.It was during such a stormy period in the history of Pandalam and Sabarimala
that the avatharam of Lord Ayyappaswamy took place. The main purpose of the avatharam of Lord Ayyappaswamy was the consecration
of the idol of Lord Dharmasastha at the Mahayogapeetam that Sabarimala was,
and the establishment of dharma.For this elimination of the forest outlaw
Udayanan was of prime importance.This was easier said and done,considering the
state of the Pandalam army in those days. Reinforcements from friendly kingdoms
to fight the forest marauder was of utmost importance. With this in mind Lord
Ayyappaswamy set off from Pandalam first to Cheerappanchira near Muhamma
to learn ‘Poozhiangam ‘ a difficult exercise of martial arts, and later to Alangad in
search of reinforcements . Lord Ayyappaswamy is believed to have arrived in Alangad seeking an audience
with the chieftain of Alangad along with Arthungal Veluthachan,the latin christian
alumini of Cheerapanchira kalari.The Alangad chieftain assured the Lord all
support and gave him a free hand to pick the best kalari warriors from among the
four famed kalaris of Alangad namely the Chembolakalari, Karumaloorkalari,
Eloorkalari and the Kunnukaravayalkarakalari.Historically, Lord Ayyappaswamy is
said to have stayed at Chembolakalari for around 3 months selecting the best
kalari exponents and honing His skills in kalaripayattu. At the end of His stay at Chembolakalari,He is believed to have handpicked his set
of kalari warriors to form what thence came to be known as Alangad Yogam.The
Lord himself is believed to have selected the best kalari exponent among the 4
kalaris the KAMPILLY PANICKER to lead the Alangad warriors.Mullapilly
Nair,another famed kalari warrior from among the 4 kalaris was chosen to be
close behind Kampilly Panicker. On the first of the malayalam month of Thulam , some three and a half centuries
ago,Lord Ayyappaswamy accompanied by Arthungal Velutha ,in the presence of
the chieftain of Alangad, another nobleman Njalur Kartha,Kampilly Panicker and
Mullassery Nair,addressed the Alangad warriors on the banks of the river Periyar
in Aluva.It was in this historic address that Lord Ayyappaswamy emphasized on
the importance of the 41 day penance or’ vritham’ being observed by every
member of the Alangad Yogam,before embarking on to fight the powerful outlaw,
Udayanan, of Karimala ’Kotta’ or Karimala Fort enroute to Sabarimala for the
punapratishta.It was perhaps in this address by the Lord,that the seeds of one of
the most important requirements of the Sabarimala pilgrimage viz; the
observance and importance of mandala vritham was sown. It is believed that Lord Ayyappaswamy himself led the Alangad Yogam albeit
unarmed.Just as Lord Krishna was in the Kurukshetra was,His mere presence was
more than enough for the Alangad and Ambalapuzha yogams to defeat the
embodiment of evil that Udayanan was.As the army of kalari warriors from
Alangad marched beyond Peroor Thodu ,then considered the border that
separated human settlements from the dense forests,Kampilly Panicker,the
leader of the Alangad forces,first called out aloud in an act of divine inspiration
S H A R A N A M A Y Y A P P A, which was loudly repeated by his fellow warriors
in unison.This was the precursor of the SHARANAM VILLI OR SHARANA
GHOSHAM ,that we intimately associate with Sabarimala pilgrimage.All of the
observances of the Sabarimala pilgrimage is believed to have been told by the
Lord Himself to the Alangad Periavan or the Guruswamy that we knowingly or
unknowingly follow today. After Udayanan was defeated by the righteous forces led by Lord
Ayyappaswamy,Alangad Yogam along with Ambalapuzha Yogam is believed to
have been actively involved in the repairs to the Sabarimala sreekovil or sanctum
and the Malikapuram sanctum in order to make it ready for the punapratishta
which is believed to have taken place in the presence of Lord Ayyappaswamy on a
makarasankrama day in the first half of 17 th century. In the later days when the Malikapuram shrine fell into a state of disrepair,it was
the Alangad Yogam that took active initiative financial and otherwise ,with
support of Ambalapuzha Yogam to repair the shrine. After the punapratishta of Sabarimala under the divine guidance of Lord
Ayyappaswamy,and His subsequent disappearance (according to one view
point,He merged in the idol of Dharmasastha),the pilgrimage went on for some
time before it was abruptly came to a standstill,for unknown reasons. The revival of the Sabarimala pilgrimage in the present form has ആലങ്ങാട് യോഗവും കാംപിള്ളിയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധം

രാജഭരണ കാലത്ത് തിരുവിതാംകൂർ രാജാക്കന്മാർക്ക് കപ്പം കൊടുത്ത് ഭരണം നടത്തിയിരുന്ന നാട്ടു രാജ്യം ആയിരുന്നു ആലങ്ങാട് .
രാജ രാജ പാണ്ട്യൻ രാജ് രാജ വർമ്മതമ്പുരാൻ പന്തളം ഭരിച്ചിരുന്നകാലം .കരിമലയിൽതാമസിച്ചിരുന്ന തിരുമല നായ്ക്കന്റെ അനുചരനും തസ്കര പ്രമാണിയുമായിരുന്ന ഉദയനനും പടയാളികളും പന്തളം രാജ്യം ആക്രമിച്ചു കൊള്ളയടിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു .അവരെ അമർച്ച ചെയ്യുന്നതിനായി കളരിയായ കളരികളിലെ യോധാക്കളെയും ദേശക്കാരെയും സംഖടിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമി തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും പന്തളത്തെ സർവ്വ സൈന്ന്യാധിപനായ കാംപിള്ളിയുടെ നിർദ്ദേശ പ്രകാരം പന്തളം രാജാവ് ആലങ്ങാട് തമ്പുരാന്റെ സഹായം അഭ്യ്ർധിക്കുകയും ആലങ്ങാട് തമ്പുരാന്റെ ആജ്ഞാനുസ്സരണം നാല് കളരികൾക്ക് ഉടമയായ ആലങ്ങാട് ചമ്പോല കുറുപ്പിന്റെ പ്രധാന കളരിയായ ചമ്പോലകളരിയിലെ ചമ്പോല കുറുപ്പ് കാരണവരുടെ ശിക്ഷണത്തിൽ അടവുകൾ പയറ്റി തെളിഞ്ഞ പ്രസിദ്ധനും പരാക്രമ ശാലിയുമായ മുപ്പത്തടം കാംപിള്ളി തറവാട്ടിലെ യുവ പടത്തലവന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ചമ്പോല കുറുപ്പിന്റെ കീഴിലുള്ള കളരി യോധാക്കളെയും ആലങ്ങാട് ദേശക്കാരെയും ആലുവ മണൽപ്പുറ ത്തുള്ള ആലിൻ ചുവട്ടിൽആലങ്ങാട് തമ്പുരാന്റെ സമക്ഷത്തിൽ യോഗം കൂടുകയും സാക്ഷാൽ ശ്രീ അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമി സന്നിഹിതനായിരുന്ന ആ യോഗത്തെ ശ്രീ അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമി തന്നെ ആലങ്ങാട് യോഗമെന്ന് വിശേ ഷിപ്പിക്കുകയും അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമിയുടെ നിർദ്ദേശ പ്രകാരം ഈ ആലങ്ങാട് സംഘം കാംപിള്ളി യുവ പടത്തലവന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ എരുമേലിയിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെടുകയും തഥവസരത്തിൽ അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമിയുടെ ഉറ്റ ചങ്ങാതിയായ വാവരു സ്വാമിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ അമ്പലപ്പുഴ യോദ്ധാക്കൾ അണിനിരക്കുകയും ആ സംഘവും എരുമേലിയിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുകയും ചെയ്തു .ആലങ്ങാട് സംഘവുമായി എത്തുന്ന സ്വാമിക്ക് മറവപ്പടയെ എതിരിടുന്നതിനായി അമ്പലപ്പുഴ സംഘം എരുമേലിയിലെ കൊടും കാടുകളിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ച്കാനന പാത ഒരുക്കുകയും ,എരുമേലിയിൽ വച്ച് പന്തളത്ത് നിന്നും കൊണ്ടുവന്ന കൊടിയും വടിയും ആലങ്ങാട് സംഘത്തെ നയിക്കുന്ന യുവ പടത്തലവന്റെ കയ്യിൽ കൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമി മുന്നിലും പ്ന്നിലായി കൊടിയും വടിയും വാളുമായി സൈനീകരും കാട്ടിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ച് അതിനു ശേഷം നടന്ന ഖോര യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മറവപ്പടയേയും കൊള്ളക്കാരെയും നിഗ്രഹിച്ച് സ്വാമി പന്തളം രാജ്യത്തെ അരക്ഷിതാവസ്ഥയിൽ നിന്നും മോചിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു .അന്ന് യുദ്ധത്തിനു ശേഷംയുദ്ധത്തിൽ വിജയം വരിച്ചതറിഞ്ഞു എരുമേലിയിൽ അമ്പലപ്പുഴ സംഘം ആദ്യവും പിന്നീട് കാട്ടിൽ നിന്നും തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ ആലങ്ങാട് സംഘം രണ്ടാമതും നടത്തിയ ആഹ്ലാദ നൃത്തം ആണ് ഇന്നത്തെ എരുമേലി പേട്ട എന്ന പേരിൽ ആലങ്ങാട് അമ്പലപ്പുഴ സംഘങ്ങൾ നടത്തുന്നത്.
അയ്യപ്പസ്വാമി ഉദയനനെയും മറവപ്പടയേയും നിഗ്രഹിച്ച വാർത്തയറിഞ്ഞ പന്തളം രാജാവ് പരിവാരങ്ങളുമായി ആഖോഷത്തോടെ എരുമേലിയിൽ എത്തുകയും സ്വാമിയെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിലേക്ക് ആനയിക്കാനായി എത്തിയ പന്തളം രാജാവിനോട് തന്റെ അവതാര ഉദ്ദേശമായ ദുഷ്ട നിഗ്രഹം സഫല മായിരിക്കുന്നെന്നും അതിൽ താൻ സംപ്രീതനെന്നും അരുൾ ചെയ്തു .ആലങ്ങാട് സംഘത്തെ നയിച്ച ആ കൊടിയും വടിയും പടത്തലവന്റെ കയ്യിൽ ഭദ്രമായി ഇരിക്കണമെന്നും എന്നും ആലങ്ങാട് യോഗത്തിന്റെ മുൻനിരയിൽ തന്നെ ഉണ്ടാകണമെന്നും പന്തളം കൊട്ടാരത്തിന്റെ സേനാ നായകനായി തുടരണമെന്നും അരുളി ചയ്തു.അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമി പന്തളം രാജാവിനെ വന്ദിച്ച ശേഷം തൊടുത്ത അസ്ത്രം പതിച്ച സ്ഥലത്ത് താൻ യോഗനിദ്രയിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്നും പന്തളം രാജന് എപ്പോൾ വേണമെങ്കിലും തന്നെക്കാണാൻ അവിടെ വരാമെന്നും അകമ്പടിയായി തന്നെ അനുഗമിച്ച കാംപിള്ളി യുവ പടത്തലവനോട് ആലങ്ങാട് സംഘത്തോടൊപ്പം പന്തളം രാജാവിനും അകമ്പടി സേവിക്കാനായി ചുമതലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നാണ്ഐതീഹ്യം .............ഇന്നും അതിന്റെ തുടർച്ചയായി കാംപിള്ളി വെളിച്ചപ്പാടിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ആലങ്ങാട്ട് സംഘം മകരവിളക്കിന് ശേഷം ശബരിമല സന്ദർശിക്കുന്ന പന്തളം രാജകുടുംബപ്രതിനിധിക്ക് അകമ്പടി സേവിക്കുന്നത് തുടർന്ന് വരുന്നു .................സ്വാമിയേ ശരണമയ്യപ്പ
