FREED is a voluntary organization initiated in the year 1992 for catalyzing people’s initiatives for sustainable development. Forum for Rural Environment and Economic Development (FREED) has completed 20 years of fruitful service in the cause of human development among the marginalized communities in and around the district of Alappuzha. Initially it was started was an environment organization but
in the year 1994-95 Freed entered into the microfinance area. Freed was one of the first organization to start microfinance operations in kerala. Starting with the formation, facilitation and capacitation of people’s initiatives, FREED has over time diversified its interventions in the area of individual and group micro-enterprises, child development, habitat development, legal aid, development of physically challenged and so forth.
