Punarjani- means 'rebirth' in Malayalam; rebirth of our mother earth....
A group of like minded people who dreamed to develop a bio diversity arboretum as a model to rejuvenate the fragile ecology of sensitive Western Ghats have been on this mission since 2007. Inspired by the environmental work of Samuel Thomas, many joined the cause and it grew into a movement. We bought barren land patches vac
ated by cash crop farmers on the stretch of the ghats and embarked on an afforestation mission. Western Ghats, one of the world's ten hottest bio diversity hotspots, has over 7,400 species of flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species, 179 amphibian species and 288 freshwater fish species; it is likely that many undiscovered species live in the Western Ghats. At least 325 globally threatened species occur in the Western Ghats. That was a natural choice to start! We are building eco friendly habitats in this arboretum, spread in approx 24 acres, where people can come, stay and experience the serenity of unadulterated bio diverse nature up close. And take with them sweet memories that will last a lifetime. Once the habitats are completed, it will be open for community events, student camps, family vacations, eco-tourism, day trekking and such. Come, join us!
