Field Update | Zep Learning Centre
Today at the Zep Learning Centre, we conducted a storytelling session with children, beginning with a picture walk through the book. As they carefully observed the illustrations, their curiosity grew, and they eagerly expressed their excitement to listen to the story.
The story we read was "Tiring Tiring!", written by Lubaina Bandukwala and beautifully illustrated by Zainab. It follows a young child as they notice the many sounds they hear throughout the day, inviting children to observe the world around them through listening.
To make the story more meaningful and accessible, it was translated and narrated in Waghri, the children's mother tongue. Listening to the story in their own language brought visible joy and active participation. The children responded enthusiastically, connected with the characters and sounds, and remained engaged throughout the session.
What happened next was especially encouraging. After the storytelling, several children voluntarily picked up the book, revisited the illustrations, and began reading and retelling the story on their own.
This session reaffirmed an important lesson: when children encounter books in a language they understand and identify with, reading becomes more than a classroom activity it becomes an enjoyable and meaningful experience.
At Zep Learning Centre, we continue to create learning spaces where children's languages, identities, and curiosity are valued as the foundation of learning.
