Today at Aksharbhumi, the children picked up seeds from the pods growing on the vines around them…
and with those very seeds, our math lesson began.

Counting. Addition subtraction.
Even a little money exchange all explored with seeds in their hands.
No memorization. No pressure of notebooks or textbooks.
Just learning through play slow, natural, joyful.

The children sat in a circle on the ground,
seeds placed in front of them, moving forward and back,
turning into numbers, tiny calculations,
making math feel as simple as holding it in your palm.
And the joy on their faces as they learned like this…
truly priceless. ❤️

Today, the children of Aksharbhumi harvested the first brinjals eggplants from their school farm.
from preparing the soil and sowing seeds to sitting beside the plants, caring for them, and closely observing their growth. every step was led by the children themselves.

Aksharbhumi, education goes beyond textbooks. We nurture self-reliance, respect for labour, and a deep connection with the land.

ZEP Initiative “Aksharbhumi”

For the past five years, ZEP Organization has been consistently working to provide education to children from the Faseparadhi tribal community.
Our “Aksharbhumi School” is not just a place for learning. it is a vibrant space where children are connected to farming, soil, and nature through experiential education.

For generations, this community has had no land, no formal jobs, and no access to education. Their sole means of livelihood is farm labour and forest-based work, and even today, nearly 40% of families depend entirely on hunting for survival.
Amidst these social and economic challenges, Aksharbhumi is striving to bring education to their children and open up new possibilities.

This year, we started an experiment in brinjal (eggplant) farming with the children. They are learning, through hands-on experience, the entire process from planting to observing the stages of growth, watering techniques, and caring for the crops with dedication.

You too can be a part of this educational journey.

अक्षरभूमीत गांधी जयंती उत्साहात साजरी

अक्षरभूमी मध्ये आज २ ऑक्टोबर महात्मा गांधी जयंती मोठ्या उत्साहात साजरी करण्यात आली. या प्रसंगी अक्षरभूमीत शिकणाऱ्या मुलांनी गांधीजींच्या जीवनाविषयी मनोगत व्यक्त केले. ओम चव्हाण, छाया पवार आणि वेदिका चव्हाण यांनी गांधीजींच्या विचारांवर व स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीतल्या त्यांच्या योगदानावर भाषणे दिली.

नेहमीप्रमाणे अक्षरभूमीमध्ये समानतेची संधी जपली गेली. अक्षरभूमी ची माजी विद्यार्थिनी जी सध्या बारावी वर्गात शिकत आहे, तिला कार्यक्रमाच अध्यक्षपद दिलं होत.

कार्यक्रमाची सुरुवात रंगांचे ठसे मुलांच्या छोट्या हातांनी पांढऱ्या फळ्यावर उमटवून करण्यात आली. गांधीजींच्या "सत्य आणि अहिंसा" या विचारांचा संदर्भ घेत मुलांनी त्यांच्या प्रयोगशील जीवनाविषयी भाषणे केली. शेवटी सर्व विद्यार्थ्यांना मिठाईचे वाटप करून कार्यक्रमाचा समारोप झाला.

आज झेप लर्निंग सेंटरमध्ये आम्ही बुक टॉक सेशन घेतलं. मुलासाठी प्रथम बुक प्रकाशनाच लेवल-3 मधील “हारू” हे गोष्टी च पुस्तक निवडले होते. आज सेंटर मध्ये सुरुवातीला मुलांचा सहभाग थोडा कमी होता, पण जसजसं पुस्तक वाचन आणि संवाद पुढे सरकत गेला तसतसा वर्गात वातावरण खुलत गेलं आणि आनंददायी व रंगतदार बनलं.

या अनुभवातून एक महत्त्वाची गोष्ट आमच्या लक्षात आली की, जर थोडी पूर्वतयारी केली तर बुक टॉक सेशन अधिक संवादात्मक होऊ शकतं. ही गोष्ट आम्हाला मागच्या महिन्यात रिडिंग किडा लायब्ररी च किताबो की दुनिया या प्रशिक्षण मद्ये शिकायला मिळाली.

नंतर सर्व मुलांनी पुस्तकातल्या “हारू” ची गोष्ट गटाने बसून वाचली आणि वाचनानंतर त्यांनी आपली मतेही मांडली. मुलांना पुस्तकं समजावी वाचनाची आवड निर्माण व्हावी हे आमचं लेसन घेण्यामागच उद्दिष्ट होत. हा छोटासा प्रयत्न आमच्यासाठी एक मोठा अनुभव ठरला. यापुढेही अशा सेशन द्वारे मुलांमध्ये वाचन संस्कृती रुजवण्याचा आम्ही प्रयत्न प्रभावीपणे करत राहू. !!

ZEP organazation educators and volunteers participated in the kitabo ki duniya training workshop organized by Reading Keeda Library Nagpur, in collaboration with community collectives

During the workshop, participants engaged in insightful sessions on readaloud practice, storytelling, booktolk, the training highlighted the importance of libraries in schools, community centers and how they help in strong reading culture.

“Kanosaa”

Today, we conducted an activity called “Kanosaa” in the classroom. At the beginning, Swaraj shared a wonderful suggestion that there should be a bell in the center so that children gather on time and with enthusiasm. We truly appreciated his idea.

After that, we asked the children, “Tell us what all you did during the day.” Each boy and girl shared two things that had happened to them during the day. From this, we realized that every incident happening in the village, community, or at home leaves an impression on the children’s minds.

One special observation was that Mayuresh, a boy who never used to speak in class, spoke today with confidence.
The purpose of this activity was to increase participation from all the children in the classroom and to make the learning process joyful and it was successfully achieved.

Today at the AKSHARBHUMI, we conducted a special lesson with the children on"map-making". during this activity, i noticed a small but promising change in a student named Shidu.

shidu’s parents have migrated to another state for work, and he currently stays with his relatives. as a result, he has been attending our learning center regularly. earlier, he seemed a bit disinterested in studies and did not actively participate in the class. however, today’s map-making activity turned out to be enjoyable for him.

at the beginning of the session, shidu carefully observed the maps made by other children, learning from them, and gradually began thinking on his own and trying to write and draw. eventually, he drew a hut located on farmland on his map. while doing this, i could clearly see the excitement on his face.

other children also happily created and shared their own map drawings. Watching this joyful learning process was heartwarming for me as well. the student showed their maps to one another, discussed them, and were thoroughly engaged it was a very hopeful experience overall. in the end, we collectively displayed all of the children’s maps in the classroom like an art exhibition.
