India has a large network of government schools across the country that offer free primary education to an economically and culturally diverse population. Special incentives for the girl child and a free mid-day-meal are aimed at keeping the children coming to school and meeting the goal of basic literacy for all. Yet, India’s literacy statistics remain disheartening and school drop-out rates rela
tively high. If children from underprivileged communities are to benefit from schooling, the education they receive must be relevant to their lives and the circumstance in which they and their families exist. In response to this, KREEDA, a not-for-profit organization, works towards imparting learning that is meaningful to the lives of the underprivileged.
