A cooperative can have committed members, a functioning enterprise and years of experience, and still struggle when the systems behind the business begin to weaken.

Accounting gaps affecting decisions. Poor product cycles affecting cash flow. Unclear roles affecting governance.

This is where the role of a federation becomes important.

WESS’s work with Bihar Credit Cooperative offers one example. The support was embedded in the day-to-day work of the cooperative, working through operational problems rather than addressing each one as a standalone training need.

Mentorship, in this context, was about strengthening the institutional capacity behind the enterprise.

We’ve unpacked what that looked like in BCC’s case. Swipe to read!

Here’s a clip of Elaben from SEWA’s 40 year anniversary celebrations where members were sharing poetry and shayari. Along with members, Elaben also shared a song.

Today, on what would have been her 93rd birthday, we celebrate and remember Elaben Bhatt, who turned a belief into a movement and a movement into a way of building a more just world.

Happy birthday Elaben :)

Behind these numbers, are women workers who own and run their cooperatives— making decisions, building businesses, creating work and strengthening Enterprises that can last.

At SEWA Cooperative Federation, this is where our women’s enterprise support system WESS comes in. We work alongside women worker led & managed Enterprises across capacity building, governance, business development, financial management, market linkages, research, and advocacy—with support shaped around what each enterprise needs.

What does it take to make a good business decision?

Is it knowing when to move forward? Knowing when to pause? Or knowing when to look around and rethink your next step?

For women building farmer-owned businesses, these decisions shape much more than the business itself.

What happens when they begin looking at these decisions together?

Read “Business Is Risky. Not Thinking Is Riskier.” to find out.

Some songs do more than preserve memories. They carry movements.

This song — બહેના ચેત શકે તો ચેત (Wake up, sister, if you can) — has echoed through SEWA meetings and village gatherings for decades. It reminds us that lasting change begins when one woman reaches another, and another, until individual voices become collective strength.

It is both an invitation and a reminder. When only a few women stood up, little changed. When women across the village organised together, everything changed.

As we revisit songs from the SEWA movement , we are also revisiting the ideas they carried. These songs travelled where speeches and reports often could not. They encouraged women to organise, build trust, stand by one another and believe that change was possible.

Through this series, Songs of SEWA, we’re revisiting the songs that have echoed through the SEWA movement for over fifty years, and the ideas they continue to carry today.
