All India Disaster Mitigation Institute All India Disaster Mitigation Institute AIDMI has been among the pioneers in the area of disaster risk mitigation.

From the beginning, the organisation showed that disasters were not only about relief but about prevention on the one hand and development on the other. Disasters could be prevented or their effects mitigated by proper planning, knowledge, training, and physical inputs. More recently, AIDMI has wanted to go further than mitigating risks – it focuses on reducing risks. This can be achieved by risk-sensitive relief programmes, long-term recovery linked to the development of safety net and risk transfer systems as well as integrating social security strategies from the global level into community activities.

About the Roundtable
The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) is convening a virtual roundtable on “Heat-Resilient Infrastructure: Lessons from Emerging Global Experience” on Friday, August 14, 2026.

The roundtable will bring together experts, practitioners, researchers, and community-focused organisations to discuss how infrastructure can better protect people from rising extreme heat. The discussion will focus on humanitarian leadership, Heat Action Plan implementation, risk-informed infrastructure planning, heat-safe housing, shaded public spaces, cooling centres, reliable water systems, green-blue infrastructure, anticipatory action, and practical support for women workers, small businesses, children, older persons, and low-income communities.

Launch of a Special Issue
The session will also mark the launch of a special issue of Southasiadisasters.net dedicated to this theme, featuring insights from field experiences, policy perspectives, community voices, and local practices. Through dialogue and knowledge exchange, the roundtable aims to highlight more inclusive, locally grounded, and people- and nature-centred approaches to heat-resilient infrastructure across South Asia and beyond.

Key Objectives:
1. To exchange practical lessons on heat-resilient infrastructure from South Asia and emerging global experience.
2. To discuss how infrastructure can protect health, livelihoods, dignity, and essential services during extreme heat.
3. To strengthen dialogue on Heat Action Plan implementation, local preparedness, green-blue infrastructure, and community-centred adaptation.

Small Heat Resilience Measures: Big Impact in Small Towns and on Small Businesses in India

Southasiadisasters.net, Issue No. 228 | January 2026

Extreme heat is no longer a seasonal emergency—it is a development challenge for India’s small towns.

AIDMI’s latest issue of Southasiadisasters.net shows how simple, low-cost heat resilience measures—shade, ventilation, drinking water, and flexible work timings—are protecting small businesses, informal workers, and local livelihoods.

Field experiences from across India demonstrate that early, people-centred action can prevent health risks, income loss, and long-term damage.

Small measures, when supported systematically, can deliver big resilience outcomes.

Nature-Based Cooling Solutions for Cities

Southasiadisasters.net, Issue No. 224 | September 2025

Co-editors: Dr. Prajna Paramita Panda (IUCN SSC AsESG, India) & Mihir R. Bhatt (AIDMI, India)

As cities across South Asia face rising heatwaves and the growing burden of urban heat islands, this special issue brings together global, regional, and local experiences to explore nature-based solutions (NbS) for urban cooling. It presents NbS not only as an environmental necessity but as a climate justice tool—especially for those living and working in heat-stressed informal settlements, small businesses, and high-density areas.

The issue features 16 valuable contributions from India, Bangladesh, Jordan, Kenya, and the wider BIMSTEC region.
