Language to Be Exact – 1

In these first posts, we are introducing a vocabulary and seeking clear definitions of terms that will provide greater clarity as we move forward. Therefore, any questions regarding the terms we are adopting are welcome.
P. D. Ouspensky reports these words from George Gurdjieff:
“For an accurate understanding, an accurate language is necessary. The study of systems of ancient knowledge begins with the study of a language that allows one to immediately determine what is being said, from which point of view it is being said, and in what context or proportion.
This new language does not, so to speak, introduce new terms or a new nomenclature. Rather, its structure is based on a new principle: the principle of relativity. In other words, it introduces relativity into all concepts and thereby makes possible a precise determination of the angle of thought. Ordinary language, for the most part, lacks this quality of relativity.
When a person has assimilated this new language, it becomes possible, through its use, to communicate knowledge and information that cannot be transmitted through ordinary language, even with an extensive philosophical and scientific vocabulary.
The fundamental characteristic of this new language is that all ideas are centered around a single idea; that is, they are all understood through their mutual relationships and from the perspective of one central principle. This idea is the idea of evolution. Not evolution in the mechanical sense, because such evolution does not exist, but evolution in the sense of conscious and voluntary development. This alone can truly be called evolution.
There is nothing in the world—from the solar system to humanity, and from humanity to the atom—that does not rise or decline, evolve or degenerate, develop or decay. Yet nothing evolves mechanically. Only degeneration and destruction occur mechanically. What cannot consciously evolve inevitably degenerates. External help is possible only to the extent that it is recognized, valued, and accepted, even if at first it is felt only as an intuition.
The language that makes understanding possible is based on knowledge of the relationship between the object being examined and its potential evolution, on understanding its place within the scale of evolution.”

Divided Attention

One way to describe divided attention is to think of it as an exercise, an attempt. Usually, our attention is directed toward something external—let us say, a passing car. Ouspensky described attention as an arrow pointing straight outward: from me to the car.
Divided attention is directed simultaneously toward the object and toward ourselves. It is like an arrow pointing in two directions at once:
* From me to the car
* From me to myself
It is like looking at the car while being accompanied by the feeling, "I am here," which we discussed earlier.
You are reading these lines now. Your attention is on the meaning of these sentences. Continue reading, while trying to add a feeling of "I am here" without interrupting the act of reading itself.
It is not necessarily easy. You will need to find the right rhythm—not too fast. You will have to become familiar with the texture of this feeling of being here. You will need to train yourself to return to this state, because it is a state that constantly slips away. It lasts for a few seconds, and then some other "I" appears and carries us away.
As a preliminary exercise, a person can try reading these lines while simultaneously remaining aware of something else: the temperature of the room, the position of their feet, or the sounds in the environment.
Attention can be cultivated. First, by learning to recognize this state; then by reaching for it as often as possible; and finally by learning to maintain it for longer periods once it has been found.
Another preliminary exercise is to try including as many things as possible within the field of attention: the meaning of these sentences, the light in the room, the surrounding sounds, and gradually the inner landscape as well. How do my instinctive and emotional centers feel right now? Am I tired, rested, relaxed, stressed, satisfied, unhappy, and so on?
And what about the motor center? Is it content to sit and read, or is it restless—constantly shifting position and wanting to escape?
It may not be easy to understand at first, but even these "inner" manifestations are, in a sense, external to me. They belong to "the machine."
Within only a few seconds, you can learn a great deal about yourself—and you will begin to recognize the same manifestations in others.
These exercises are to the state of self-remembering what the gym is to an athlete: they strengthen the muscle of attention. They are not the final result, but they bring us closer to it.

The Three Forces – Part Three

When we want to become more present, the mind acts as the first force, affirming purpose. The body, with its distractions and tendencies toward comfort or laziness, provides the opposing force.
This type of obstacle is often overlooked. We speak about the beauty of the present moment and the profound joy of awareness, but we must remember that a part of us will resist. It will find excuses: I'm tired. I don't have time. This isn't the right moment. I want something else.
Here is another example on a smaller scale: I want to be present, for one minute, right now.
This statement is the first force. The constant stream of thoughts crowding my mind provides the opposing force. If I truly want to be present now, I must introduce a third force; otherwise, the first two will simply collide and cancel each other out.

I can choose among different thoughts or attitudes that support my purpose. I could remember how flat and insignificant life feels when I am absent from it. I could use a simple exercise as a reminder—focusing on my breathing or becoming aware of the sounds around me.
Beauty, in particular, can be a powerful third force. Looking at something beautiful, such as a flower or a work of art, while affirming my intention to be present, helps prevent me from becoming completely absorbed in my thoughts. It offers something external on which to rest my attention—a tool for awareness.

I am no longer trapped within myself, consumed by my usual worries. I am present.

The three forces - part two

In our ordinary conditions we are able to see only the first and second forces. The third force is typically invisible to ordinary glance. Seeing her takes a special kind of attention.
Like: I'm worried about my sister . I think she trusts everyone too much and I'm afraid this will get her in trouble.
So I decide to give her a talk about friendship and trust (first force). But the speech immediately annoys her (second strength) and she accuses me of not trusting her enough.

So I decide to take a different approach. Instead of preaching to her, I wait. Until, one day, one of her friends does something that hurts her emotionally (first force), and she's irritated and confused (second force). At this point she will be more receptive than my speech, which this time will touch her first-hand experience. Now she can understand what I have to say to her. This time I act as a third force, not before.
Recognizing the third force and knowing how to use it requires a special skill.

The three forces - part one

According to the Fourth Way, every action in the universe requires the presence of three forces. The Law of Three, as Gurdjieff called it, permeates every event, small or large, physical or psychological, from the creation of the universe to the dog that bites the mailman.

The First Force can be described as the initial impulse to accomplish something: Affirmation.

The second force manifests itself as Resistance to the first. That's why it's also called Counter Force. We might think that life would be easier without resistance, but in fact the opposite force is necessary.

The Third Force, also called Neutralizing, mixes the first two and creates the conditions for a result. All three forces are equally necessary. If one is missing, the action is not resolved and there is no result.

Gurdjieff called the three forces: Holy Affirmation, Holy Denial, Holy Reconciliation.

Some simple examples to illustrate how the three forces work.

I want to go to a party where my friends are (first force, affirmation). But it's a long walk, and it's raining (reverse force). A friend called me saying she could give me a ride (neutralizing force). Deciding to go.

My boss called and said I gotta work next Sunday. His request meets my reluctance to work weekends. My wife, sitting next to me on the phone call, says if I'm at work even on Sunday she'll leave me. I will answer no.

From this example we also understand that every time the first force enters the game, it evokes an opposite force as a reaction. If I wander the streets of a city without purpose, all the streets are good. Every little event that makes me stop, neutral.

But if I have to be in a specific place at a date now - if I have an appointment - obstacles suddenly arise. I might be headed the wrong direction. The lovely coffee and pleasant conversation with the waiter is suddenly making me run late. She has become the opposite force.

Take a few moments to watch this potter at his wheel. His hands press upward, shaping the clay from below (first force — affirmation, the form he intends). The clay resists, wanting to collapse outward, fighting the pressure (second force — counter force, the material's nature). The water on his palms, neither pushing nor resisting, allows the two to meet without tearing apart — it lubricates, mediates, transforms friction into flow (third force — neutralizing, the reconciling element). Without the clay's resistance, there is no vessel. Without the potter's pressure, only a lump. Without the water, the clay cracks and the wheel stops. Do you notice how all three forces are equally necessary for the bowl to emerge?

Know Thyself

From Gurdjieff:
“Freedom, liberation—this must be man's purpose. To become free, to escape slavery: this is what a man should strive for once he has become, even a little, aware of his situation. This is the only way out for him, because nothing else is possible as long as he remains a slave, both inwardly and outwardly. He cannot cease to be an outward slave as long as he remains an inward slave. Therefore, to become free, one must attain inner freedom.
The primary cause of man's inner slavery is his ignorance—above all, ignorance of himself. Without self-knowledge, without understanding the mechanism and functions of his own being, man cannot be free, cannot govern himself, and will always remain a slave, dependent upon the forces acting upon him.
That is why, in the ancient teachings, the first instruction given to those who sought liberation was: ‘Know thyself.’
These words, generally attributed to Socrates, are rooted in doctrines and schools far older than the Socratic tradition. Although modern thought does not entirely ignore this principle, it often possesses only a vague understanding of its true meaning and significance. The ordinary person of our time, even if interested in philosophy or science, rarely understands that the injunction ‘Know thyself’ refers to the necessity of understanding one's own machine—the human machine.
The structure of the human machine is fundamentally similar in all people; therefore, it is this structure that one must first study: the functions and laws of one's organism. In the human machine, everything is interconnected. Each function depends so greatly upon the others that it is impossible to study one without studying them all. Knowledge of any one aspect requires knowledge of the whole.
It is possible to know everything about a human being, but this requires considerable time and effort. Above all, it requires the application of the correct method and, equally importantly, the guidance of a competent teacher.”
These are Gurdjieff's words.
My teacher speaks of another, deeper meaning of the phrase “Know thyself.” It is this: know your Higher Self through presence. By being fully present, you come to recognize that which is beyond the conditioned personality—the deeper reality of who you truly are

Essence and Personality-2

From Gurdjieff:
“In working on oneself, there is a very important moment: the moment when a person begins to distinguish between personality and essence. A man's real ‘I’, his individuality, can grow only from his essence. It can be said that individuality is mature essence. But for essence to grow, it is first necessary to lessen the constant pressure that personality exerts upon it, because the obstacles to the growth of essence are contained within personality.
If we consider a person of average culture, we will see that in the vast majority of cases personality is the active element, while essence remains passive. The inner growth of a person cannot begin as long as this order remains unchanged. Personality must become passive, and essence must become active. This can happen only when the ‘buffers’ have been removed or weakened, because the buffers are the principal weapon by which personality keeps essence under its control.”
So we encounter a new concept: buffers.
Buffers (a term borrowed from the shock-absorbing discs between train cars that prevent violent collisions) are psychological mechanisms that prevent us from seeing the contradictions among our many different “I”s. When a truth about ourselves becomes too uncomfortable, we simply erase it from our awareness.
If we are habitually late, buffers allow us to sincerely believe that we are never late. One time it was traffic; another time, an important phone call; a third time, “Didn't we say three-thirty?” And so on. It is always the others who arrive “far too early”; worse for them. These deceptions are not directed at others but at ourselves.
Another form of buffering rejects the present moment itself. Simply remaining present to what is before us is a state that must be consciously maintained, and we are not accustomed to it. We are drawn toward the moment, yet once we truly encounter it, we find it difficult to endure. This type of buffer can manifest in visible ways—often more noticeable to others than to ourselves: sneezing, scratching, checking the time, coughing, or interrupting someone.
If you have a dog, try looking at it steadily. It will probably begin to feel the weight of your gaze and, in response, invent a buffer—perhaps scratching itself or suddenly finding something else to do. At that point, you can begin to observe the same process within yourself: discovering an inner dog that feels the gaze of the Master.

The Worlds - Part Two.

Discussion about the worlds of the other day may seem overly theoretical and abstract from our practical lives. How does it concern us to know that there are different worlds, some faster in vibrations and free in possibilities, others slower and heavier?
We experience some of these worlds as psychological states. In the same day we can vary several times between the states we are about to describe.

World 96 (I remember once again that the number refers to how many laws that world is subject to, so the higher the figure, the greater the limitation) is being psychologically tested as negativity. Desperation, anger, and so on. Or criminal tendencies, deep sleep that can be synthesized in the idea of 'false personality', which we will talk about later. An unpleasant place to be, with little or no way out.
The next world 48, subject to half of the laws, appears to us as neutral impressions; without emotional impact. Neither positives nor negatives. Someone asks us for directions, we provide them. We button up our shirts, wash the dishes. This is the world of personality, the part we have already described as learned and imitated by others. We live it as non-emotional because the personality is not really alive, but it is something artificial, a cultural embellishment. Intellectual center works at this level.
World 24 is what we feel when we are faced with natural impressions. (When we receive impressions of a particular world, we absorb the matter: we call this matter ‘hydrogen’. For example, we can say that we receive the natural world as hydrogen 24). Motor and instinct centers work at this level - I remember however that it wasn’t said that in the center you always work with the hydrogen that is right for them: this only happens in a healthy and balanced being. Watch what happens when someone comes in contact with water, on a beach. There is an immediate and noticeable change. From the personality to the essence. This state is associated with a certain type of emotion. We feel alive.
World 12 would be the world of the emotional and sexual center. In fact, however, the emotional center rarely works with this refined energy and is ‘settled’ with hydrogen 24. The 12th world is also that of the superior emotional center, of self-remembrance. It's a different emotion than what you feel in the world 24. More refined, more subtle. Less visible, more powerful. In world 24 we might laugh from the heart for the joy of doing tricks in the water, in world 12 there is a certain inner silence. Developing this world is the work of schools, it doesn’t happen spontaneously. Particular efforts are needed, such as trying to be present and not expressing negativity.
Finally world 6, the highest reached by man, is the realm of the higher intellectual center. It is tested very rarely. As we have said before, it is a harsh world, which has to do with the mystical perception of great laws.
I invite you to ask questions on this topic, which is complex.
