Climate change is no longer a distant risk for the urban poor, it is a daily threat to their livelihoods. A street vendor without shade, a home-based worker without ventilation, a small enterprise without safe storage for inventory: each is one heatwave or flood away from losing everything they've built.

This is the gap Mahila Housing Trust (MHT) is helping to close under the ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ท๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐—ท๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ (๐—ฆ๐—๐—ฌ) the urban livelihoods programme of JEEVIKA, Rural Development Department, Government of Bihar.

The bigger lesson here is simple but urgent: livelihood resilience and climate resilience cannot be planned separately. A livelihood strategy without climate mitigation built in carries risk by default for the worker, the enterprise, and the community around it.

Extreme heat is directly affecting the health, income, and dignity of informal women workers. For women working in markets, streets, homes, construction sites, and other heat-exposed spaces, rising temperatures can lead to illness, wage loss, medical expenses, and food insecurity.

Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), with the support of Humanity Insured, has pioneered parametric to protect women workers in India from the growing risks of record-breaking heatwaves.

In 2026, with the support of Humanity Insured, HERA and CelsiusPro, MHT is implementing parametric heat insurance for vulnerable women workers in Gujarat and Delhi, including street vendors, home-based workers, domestic workers, waste workers, construction workers, and other heat-exposed livelihood groups.

So far, over 39,300 women workers have been insured, including 30,800 women in Gujarat and 8,500 women in Delhi.

In 2026, extreme heat crossed the predefined threshold, triggering automatic payouts. A total of Rs. 20,60,000 (USD 21,700) was disbursed as insurance pay out to the women workers across Gujarat and Delhi, providing timely cash support during periods of dangerous heat and income loss.

This initiative highlights the importance of women-centered climate risk financing solutions that provide immediate relief while strengthening long-term resilience.

Most people are just not looking in the right places.

For over 30 years, Mahila Housing Trust has worked alongside women in informal settlements across India, strengthening housing, improving access to services, building trust, and turning lived experience into collective action.

Today, women are mapping heat vulnerabilities, co-designing Heat Action Plans, shaping local decision-making, and leading climate resilience efforts in their own communities.

This is not just participation.

It is climate leadership.

And it raises a larger question for funders, policymakers, and urban practitioners: what happens when women-led institutions are recognised not as recipients of climate action, but as the builders of resilience our cities urgently need?

This , as London Climate Action Week brings the worldโ€™s climate community together, Mahila Housing Trust, IKAI Collective, and India Impact House are taking this conversation to London.

Celebrating World Environment Day in , Jalgaon, and Indore

Grassroots women came together in Amalner, Jalgaon, and Indore to celebrate World Environment Day with purpose and enthusiasm.

In , Municipal Corporation along with Mahila Housing Trust organized an impactful awareness rally that united key leaders and community members for the cause. Smt. Smita Tai Wagh (MLA), the Mayor and Vice Mayor, the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner, our dedicated community sisters, and our Paryavaran Sakhis (Environmental Volunteers). Together, we marched for the environment and carried out tree plantations at multiple locations across the city. The women from Supreme Colony's community also took the initiative to plant trees in their own area, demonstrating true grassroots leadership.

In , MHT organized environmental drawing competitions for women to help them understand nature and its importance in our daily lives. These creative activities sparked meaningful conversations about environmental conservation among participants.

๐Ÿ™ Thank you to everyone who participated in making this day meaningful. Small actions, when done together, create big change.
