In Hindi, the word Lokkatha means “people’s story.” Recognizing that community media is a means for sharing people’s stories, Lokkatha seeks to encourage an exchange of creative ideas, thoughts and philosophies. Lokkatha as an online platform strategically harnesses the opportunity of the internet as a democratic medium for disseminating media content and allowing public voices to be heard. Lokka
tha is an initiative of Drishti, an NGO based in Ahmedabad, India, which uses media and arts to build empowered communities that value self-expression and uphold human rights. Drishti has set up community media units across India, training local people from rural backgrounds in video and radio production and communication techniques. Through Lokkatha, Drishti hopes to empower communities with a voice of their own and to use the platform as a tool for awareness and future advocacy in India.
