A recent study titled “Mommy, do you love your phone more than me?” asked a simple question: does a parent’s phone habit affect how a child feels about themselves? The answer was yes.

Researchers spoke with hundreds of adolescents and found a clear pattern — when kids reached out for connection and were met with a screen instead, many felt dismissed, unimportant, or not worth the attention.

Experts call this “insecure attachment.” When a child can’t consistently count on a caregiver’s presence, it can quietly chip away at their confidence over time. Other studies back this up too, linking parents’ phone habits to more screen dependency in kids, and more distant, tension-filled relationships at home.

The takeaway isn’t to ditch your phone — it’s to notice the moments that matter. When your child comes to you, look up. That’s where trust is built.
