“Equality may be a fiction, but one must accept it as a governing principle.” — Dr. B. R. Ambedkar

On this , we remember that true democracy begins at the grassroots. We hold this picture from our field, close to this value because in this moment, community members come together to review, question, and reflect - using simple tools to express their voices and hold systems accountable.

This is the spirit of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision - where every citizen has the right to participate, to question, and to shape decisions that affect their lives.

From village spaces to public systems, equality is not a given—it must be practiced.

At Utthan, we continue to build spaces where communities—especially women—lead, decide, and transform their futures with dignity.

Utthan brought powerful grassroots stories from rural Gujarat to Public Policy Dialogues 2026 on , hosted by Bharti Institute of Public Policy.

At the space, Pragati Sambrani and Krishi Sakhi Nisha engaged visitors in conversations on how our food is produced, who produces it, and how it reaches us—through interactive displays like millet products, goat milk soaps, and a Snakes & Ladders game on sustainable farming.

Pallavi Sobti-Rajpal highlighted how Mahila Sangathans are driving climate-resilient agriculture, strengthening livelihoods, and advancing women farmers’ rights across Gujarat.

A strong call was made to address women’s landlessness and improve financial systems for SHGs.

Today, our colleague Selva Kumarlvakumar0275 presented findings from Utthan's district-wide situational analysis of small-scale fisherfolk at M S Swaminathan Research Foundation - MSSRF MSS@100 Webinar Series #76, evidence gathered across 1,003 households in Bhavnagar and Amreli, Gujarat.
The Findings call for urgent attention:
💡 54.5% fisherfolk say fishing is no longer a reliable livelihood.
💡 64.7% do not want their grandchildren to continue.
💡 51.87% have been affected by cyclones, and recovery remains a significant gap.
💡 78.92% have never heard the term "climate change", yet experience its effects every season.

The Study points to clear action priorities:
➡️ Supporting alternative livelihoods during off-season months
➡️ Streamlining the licence renewal process so every Pagadiya fisher is covered
➡️ Addressing gear damage caused by large vessel nets in nearshore zones
➡️ Strengthening coastal infrastructure, and securing land titles for fishing households.

These are not insurmountable challenges but require coordinated effort, evidence-based policy, and communities at the table.

At Utthan, we believe in and look forward to working alongside government, research institutions, and civil society toward collective impact for Gujarat's .

Utthan believes that sharing and exchange strengthens the ecosystem. We were glad to contribute at Jal Samvaad, hosted by Global Water Innovation Centre for Action (GWICA) in partnership with CSRBOX® in Ahmedabad.

Dr. Selvakumar, Lead, Knowledge Management and Partnerships presented Utthan’s Social × Technical × Technological model for climate-resilient water security, highlighting the role of Jal Jankars in data-driven groundwater planning.

He also called for rejuvenation of the Malan River, a 44km lifeline, acting in time to restore threats of industrial waste and plastic pollution, emphasizing the need for a community-led stewardship model with multi-stakeholder partnerships to rejuvenate Malan, running through Mahuva block, Bhavnagar district, often referred to as the Kashmir of Saurashtra.

Drawing from Utthan's successes in its water-gender-sustainability interventions, he reinforced a key belief: Water security is sustainable only when women lead and communities take ownership.

Women-led change makes waves at the Water Digest World Water Awards 2025-26.
We are thrilled to share Utthan recognition for facilitating a gendered revolution in Bharuch’s Water & Sanitation landscape.

Utthan is proud to receive the Best NGO - Community Project Award
Bharti Vasava, Pani Samiti member of Dungri village, Valia, Bharuch received the Award for Women Contributor of the Year.

These efforts in grassroot transformation were applauded by Shri C.R. Patil, Union Minister for Jal Shakti.

The Awards are not for a project, they are for rural women Pani Samiti members, who stood shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts in equitable decision making. It is for women who turned from just being water collectors to sensitive infrastructure and technology designers, fund mobilizers, behavioural change promoters, and aquifer protectors.

Our team didn’t just solve a water & sanitation problem, we shifted power - because when women and communities are capacitated to govern, water and sanitation becomes safer, communities become healthier, and development becomes real.

Gratitude to Water Digest for championing on-ground action in the water sector.
Gratitude to Apcotex and EdelGive Foundationdation ation lgive foundation for trusting us and supporting this important piece of Utthan’s work
