Women’s Spirit was honored to participate in the Global Summit on Economic Abuse, held this past week. Initiated by the International Coalition to End Economic Abuse, of which Women’s Spirit is a proud member, and in partnership with NO MORE, the summit brought together professionals, leaders, and decision-makers from across the social, economic, and public sectors worldwide.

The summit convened a diverse group of participants - from major corporations to policymakers - all committed to advancing collaborative approaches for raising awareness, improving interventions, and preventing Economic Abuse.

Women’s Spirit was represented by Adv. Hadas Arnon-Sharabi, Head of Policy and Legislation, in a panel discussing the critical role of banks as essential service providers in the financial recovery of survivors of economic abuse. In her remarks, she highlighted the power of cross-sector partnerships and presented a joint initiative led by Women’s Spirit in cooperation with the Bank of Israel, the Association of Banks in Israel, the Ministry of Welfare, and emergency shelters. This initiative aims to design precise, tailored solutions for women rebuilding their financial independence after abuse.

This landmark summit - the first of its kind - represents an important step forward in the global effort to understand and combat economic abuse. We hope it will catalyze deeper knowledge, stronger collaborations, and effective international policymaking.

Announcing November 26 as the International Day for the Elimination of Economic Abuse!
Exactly one month from today, we will mark the International Day for the Elimination of Economic Abuse, taking place one day after the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Women’s Spirit has long led efforts to recognize economic abuse as a distinct form of violence, one that demands its own definition, dedicated response, and tailored intervention mechanisms. This work includes advancing legislative proposals aimed at securing formal recognition and legal protection for those affected.
Over the years, several bills have been introduced in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), the first as early as 2009, to define economic abuse and equip courts with the legal tools to support survivors. In 2020, a government bill passed its first reading, but its progress was halted following the dissolution of the government.

Tomorrow, the State Audit Committee was scheduled to hold a discussion on the lack of legislative progress and additional measures to combat economic abuse, with participation from representatives of the State Comptroller’s Office, relevant government ministries and Women’s Spirit.
Unfortunately, the session has been postponed. We hope a new date will soon be set, given the urgent need for meaningful action to address this growing phenomenon.
Women’s Spirit remains steadfast in its commitment to continue working until economic abuse is clearly defined in law and until effective, practical tools for supporting survivors are fully implemented within Israel’s legal system.
--------
Since 2022, Women’s Spirit has marked Economic Abuse Awareness Day, an initiative first launched in Israel through the International Coalition, in which we are proud partners.
Our ongoing mission is to establish this day as an official national and international observance ensuring that economic abuse is no longer invisible.

Women’s Spirit is proud to take part in an international Session focused on strengthening the banking sector’s response to economic abuse, held on November 18 as part of the Global Summit on Economic Abuse.
The session will bring together representatives from financial institutions and civil society organizations worldwide to explore how banks can advance economic security for survivors of violence and become an active part of the solution and support network.

Representing Women’s Spirit will be Adv. Hadas Arnon-Sharabi, Director of Policy and Legislation, who will share Israeli perspectives, legislative developments and key initiatives addressing this critical issue.
The session will also showcase innovative global practices that foster public responsibility within the banking system and provide practical support for individuals affected by economic abuse.
We look forward to sharing key insights and takeaways from the discussion soon.

Economic abuse is a hidden yet devastating phenomenon - a sophisticated tool often used within abusive relationships. It is a strategy of control that undermines a woman’s economic and professional foundation, thereby perpetuating and deepening her dependence on the abusive partner.

Recognizing economic abuse is essential, as it manifests through deliberate tactics of isolation and dependency, preventing access to shared financial resources or information about assets, coerced debts in the victim’s name, sabotaging careers, blocking employment opportunities, and obstructing paths to advancement.

Women's Spirit focuses on addressing the economic dimension as a key to breaking the cycle of violence. We accompany women through processes of economic and occupational recovery, providing them with targeted tools to build financial autonomy.

We invite you - partners from the business and social sectors - to join us at the Global Summit for the Prevention of Economic Abuse on November 18, 2025. This is an opportunity to explore innovative solutions and take part in making meaningful changes.

Details and registration are now available - the link is in the first comment.

Captain Or Mozes dreamed of becoming a doctor. She loved life, her partner, her family, and her country.
Captain Or Mozes was a heroine who gave her life in defense of the people and the homeland, saving dozens of IDF soldiers when she fought against cruel terrorists who attempted to break into the Zikim base on October 7, 2023.
Captain Or Mozes is a role model, first among equals-women and men, heroines and heroes-who fought, the few against the many, to protect the home and save civilians and soldiers during Hamas’s murderous surprise attack.

We have chosen Captain Or Mozes as a symbol to mark October 7. Her story is an example of the dedication of many brave men and women-security forces and civilians alike-who sacrificed their lives so that the State of Israel could continue to exist.
We will forever remember Captain Or Mozes, who fell defending the homeland alongside brave and courageous fighters, women and men. We will forever embrace the thousands of wounded, in body and in soul, some of whom fight every day anew to live full and normal lives. We will pray for the swift return of our hostages from captivity and for all IDF soldiers to come back safely from the front lines.
Captain Or Mozes loved the song “Ir Miklat” (“City of Refuge”) by Shila Ben Saadon. The last line of the song is: “Another day when I’ll tell you that everything is okay, and this is such a world.” Thanks to Or and her comrades who fought, fell, and were wounded, we are all able to say today that everything is okay.
We will remember and never forget!

Announcing November 26 as International Economic Abuse Awareness Day!

Economic abuse is severe and binding. It traps women in financial dependence, turning money into a tool of control within the relationship. Actions such as blocking access to a bank account or coercive debt create an invisible prison, preventing women from breaking free from the cycle of harm and abuse.
At Women’s Spirit, we support women in building a path to professional and economic rehabilitation, enabling them to gain financial independence and live a life free from abuse.
On November 18, 2025, the Global Summit for the Prevention of Economic Abuse will take place - a unique opportunity to listen, learn, and contribute to change. We will participate in the "Designing for Safety" session, which will explore innovative ways to design products, services, and systems that help detect, respond to, and prevent economic abuse.

Coalition Against Economic Abuse

----------------------------
Women’s Spirit works to have economic abuse recognized as a distinct form of violence that requires a unique response and treatment. Economic Abuse Awareness Day was first marked in Israel in 2022, initiated by The International Coalition Against Economic Abuse in which Women’s Spirit is a partner. Since then, the organization has been working to establish the day officially.

The horrific murder of Hodaya Fadida, a young pregnant woman, is the direct result of a systemic failure and a deeply flawed policy. When the murderer is a security guard using a state-issued license to carry his weapon, this ceases to be a private tragedy. It becomes a damning indictment of a policy that turns homes into deathtraps.

For years, our organization, Women's Spirit, has focused on dismantling the dynamics of control that trap and limit women in toxic relationships. As far back as 2018, long before the government began its aggressive policy of loosening firearm restrictions, our CEO, Tamar Schwartz, stood as the sole representative of women's organizations before the "Ronen Committee" (appointed by what is now the Ministry of National Security). She warned them of the dangers inherent in their licensing process. We understood then what our government still fails to see: a gun in the home is, by its very existence, a tool of control. It creates an atmosphere of terror and existential fear long before any finger is on the trigger.

The mere presence of a handgun in a drawer fundamentally shifts the balance of power. It becomes one more weapon in an arsenal of control-some overt, many covert and insidious-all designed to paralyze a woman, restrict her freedom, and rob her of the choice to live in safety.
Current policy treats fi****ms as a security solution while ignoring the terror they unleash within the home. Punishing the murderer after the fact does nothing to fix the system that enabled him. The murder of women is a symptom of this broken system.

We demand that the government wake up. The criteria for obtaining a firearm license must be immediately and severely tightened, and the vetting process must be strengthened. It is time to recognize that a weapon in the wrong hands is not just a potential danger-it is an active and lethal threat to life at home.

From a "Private Matter" to Official Recognition

The Global Conference for the Prevention of Economic Abuse: On the Path to Official Recognition

While public discourse acknowledges various forms of violence, such as physical and verbal abuse, economic abuse has largely remained a hidden phenomenon, often perceived as a "private matter between partners" or simply "a part of married life." The exclusive control of financial resources, the denial of access to them, or the use of financial dependency to prevent a partner from working are common examples in abusive relationships that still lack sufficient public and formal recognition.
As the leading organization in Israel dedicated to helping women survivors of violence achieve financial independence, Women's Spirit is spearheading the public and policy discourse in this field. We are working to have economic abuse recognized as a key component of violent relationships.

This struggle belongs to all of us.

We are honored to invite you to register for the Global Conference for the Prevention of Economic Abuse, which will take place on November 18, 2025. This conference, featuring representatives from around the world, is a unique opportunity to learn, deepen your understanding, and become a partner in this vital social change.

When rabbinical courts interpret physical and emotional violence as "tensions at home" - as a recent disturbing article by "Shomrim" revealed - it is a painful reminder of the importance of the struggle for recognition of the phenomenon of economic abuse. If society and the establishment have difficulty recognizing even the most overt violence, it is all the more so that they struggle to deal with economic abuse - a hidden and damaging control mechanism that traps women in a prison invisible from the outside, but one that is very real and devastating in its consequences.

Womens Spirit, which helps women affected by violence achieve economic independence, works to raise awareness of the phenomenon of economic abuse and demands legal, judicial, and social recognition of the phenomenon. In order to fight it, we must first give it a name and work to ensure its recognition.
