Bat-Sheva Yahalomi’s story is one of extraordinary maternal courage in the face of unimaginable terror.

On October 7, she escaped an attempted abduction with her two daughters, while her 12-year-old son, Eitan, and her husband, Ohad, were taken hostage from Kibbutz Nir Oz.

Her courage did not end when she reached safety.

For 52 days, she fought for Eitan’s return.

For 510 days, she fought to bring Ohad home.

Ohad Yahalomi z”l was murdered in captivity. His body was finally returned to Israel 510 days after October 7.

Bat-Sheva’s story reminds us that survival is not the end of the story. Sometimes courage is what carries a family through everything that comes after.

Her story from that day is also portrayed in the series *Red Alert*, available to stream internationally on Paramount+ with Israeli actress Rotem Sela playing Bat-Sheva.

Only weeks before October 7, Alona Astapenko z”l completed seven months of police training.

She marked the moment with a proud post:

“I am a police officer in the State of Israel, and I am proud to wear this uniform.”

On October 7, the 25-year-old patrol officer was assigned to help secure the Nova festival. When reports arrived that people were being shot on a nearby road, Alona joined two fellow officers and drove toward the gunfire.

She reached the wounded. Together, Alona and Sagi faced around 14 terrorists with only their handguns and limited am******on.

Alona had only just begun the career she had worked so hard to build. But in those final moments, she showed exactly what wearing that uniform meant to her.

On October 7, in Ofakim, it wore pajamas and sports shoes.

After Tali Hadad found her son seriously wounded and brought him to medics, she faced a choice no mother should ever have to make: stay beside her child or return for those still trapped in danger.

She went back.

Tali’s story is one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage from the darkest day in Israel’s history.

Amit Mann z”l was only 22 when she made an extraordinary choice: as Hamas terrorists attacked Kibbutz Be’eri, the young Magen David Adom paramedic left safety and ran into danger to save lives.

Her story is about the deepest meaning of duty: remaining with the wounded when rescue could not reach them and continuing to care even as the danger closed in.

Her story is not really about cookies. It is about what happened when a woman facing five armed terrorists refused to surrender control of herself.

Inbal Rabin-Lieberman’s story is one of the most extraordinary examples of courage from the darkest day in Israel’s history.

Her leadership at Kibbutz Nir Am reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing to act despite it.

Alongside Nir Am’s security team and the forces fighting nearby, Inbal’s leadership helped protect an entire community.

Sukkot is a holiday of gathering. Of building the sukkah together, sharing meals and spending time as a family beneath its temporary roof.

This is the first Sukkot since October 7 with no hostages remaining in Gaza. That brings enormous relief, but it does not mean that every family is whole.

Around many sukkah tables, places will still be empty. Parents, sons and daughters, siblings and partners have once again been called to reserve duty, while those at home prepare for another holiday without them.

At WIZO, we continue to stand beside reservists and their families, supporting those serving and those carrying so much in their absence.

This Sukkot, we wish for quieter days and for every family to be reunited beneath one roof.

Nathanel Young believed in the power of music.

A talented DJ who loved hip-hop, rap and creating music, Nathanel came to Israel from England as a lone soldier and served in the Golani Brigade. He was killed on October 7th while defending his base and the nearby community.

For Nathanel, music was more than something he loved. It gave him a way to express himself, connect with others and build confidence.

Today, that passion is being carried forward at WIZO Beit HaKerem in Jerusalem.

WIZO Beit HaKerem serves teenagers who have often faced complex emotional, behavioral and educational challenges, and works to help each student discover a path in which they can succeed. Music and sound were already an important part of that approach, with an existing sound program and DJ studies.

After meeting Nathanel’s parents, Chantal and Nicky Young, a new dedicated music and DJ space was created in his memory, expanding the program with more equipment, more workstations and more opportunities for students to create, learn and find their own voice.

Nathanel found confidence and connection through music.

Now, his memory is helping more young people find theirs.

Sometimes, change begins with an idea and the right space to help it grow.

Naomi Weinstein joined WIZO’s A New Social Order with Golden Hour, a project designed to connect women over 60, locally and globally, based on their location and language, so they can meet for coffee in real life.

Through the program, she found the tools and opportunity to develop her idea, as well as a diverse community of women with whom she could share the journey.

Because when women come together with knowledge and purpose, an idea can become connection, and connection can become meaningful change. 🩷
