Association of Ethiopian Jews - AEJ

Association of Ethiopian Jews - AEJ Israel’s premier Ethiopian Israeli-led organization, advocating for an equal and just society. Founded in 1993

07/01/2026

Yesterday, we participated in a Knesset committee addressing over policing of Ethiopian Israelis.
At the opening of the discussion, members of the community were given the floor and shared breaking testimonies of their encounters with law enforcement.

It was a powerful and important moment. One painful reminder of the reality behind the data and official reports. For us at AEJ, these testimonies are the connect the policy change and advocacy work we do every day to the lived reality on the ground.

Our goal is clear: to change policy, reform policing mechanisms, and demand accountability and transparency from law enforcement authorities. Only than, atrocities like the ones heard yesterday will not repeat themselves.

We have a new CEO!

We are proud to announce that Mazal Bisawer has officially assumed the role of CEO of the Association of Ethiopian Jews.

Mazal brings over a decade of experience in the social and civic sectors, with a strong track record in anti-racism advocacy, policy change, and community work. In 2019, she served as the Association’s spokesperson and later as Acting CEO. Now, she returns to lead the organization with deep dedication and a clear vision for the path ahead.

Her appointment comes at a critical time of social transformation in Israel and around the world — a time in which the work of the Association is more vital than ever. We welcome her leadership and look forward to advancing our shared mission: equality, justice, and fair representation for Ethiopian Israelis.

Welcome Back Mazal!

In 2024, Israel’s Justice Ministry’s Government Unit for the Fight Against Racism conducted a comprehensive survey among government employees to assess the state of racism and develop actionable strategies based on the data.
A total of 6,402 employees participated, revealing both progress and significant challenges.

The survey found that 65% of respondents were aware that their office had an officer responsible for preventing racism, indicating increased awareness. However, the data also highlighted the need for ongoing efforts, with 35% of employees from diverse populations reporting experiences of discrimination within the civil service. Furthermore, a significant number of respondents indicated that they did not report incidents of racism they had experienced or witnessed, fearing potential consequences.
Along with the survey findings, the data from the Government Unit for the Fight Against Racism underscore the importance of systemic action:
In 2024, the unit received 367 complaints, 29% of which were related to discrimination in public services.
In response, the extension of the temporary provision to amend the Legal Aid Law in October 2024 represents an important development. This change allows individuals who have experienced discrimination to file a complaint and pursue a civil lawsuit without needing to undergo a financial eligibility check

AEJ participated in the annual conference organized by Friends of Ethiopian Jews (FEJ), that brought together Ethiopian Israeli leaders of NGOs, social entrepreneurs, business owners and social activists. We met at the “Shavu Banim” community center in Be’er Sheva—an impressive and inspiring space.
We discussed successes, challenges and ways to strengthen collaborations.
It was a meaningful day, full of learning and vision, which illustrated how essential such meetings are.

A big thank you to FEJ for their partnership and support over the years.

It’s been years of prayer, and beseeching! How we hoped! And finally - after more than a decade, Avera Mengistu is home! Our hearts are bursting with joy to watch him in the arms of his family.

More than ten years of prayers and tears, and hope that were never extinguished. Today we are grateful for his return home.

Sorry, Avera, that it took so long, but we never forgot you for a moment. This struggle has come to an end, and the tears of sorrow have been replaced by tears of joy.

We pray for the return of all the hostages - NOW! And for the rehabilitation and healing of those who have returned to us. 🎗️

With a full heart of relief and joy, we extend our warmest blessings to our dear board member, Professor Jonathan Dekel-Chen, on the safe return of his son, Sagui Dekel- Chen, who came back on Shabbat from the depths of hell.

We embrace the family and wish them days of peace, calm, and healing.

Our hearts are with all the families of the hostages, still waiting for the return of their loved ones.

We pray for the swift return of all of them—now!
