In light of the current events and the approaching Pride festival in Israel, I was asked the following question:
“How would you respond to Western Christians who refuse to ‘stand with Israel’ because, while they pray for believers in the country, they believe the nation as a whole stands against Christ and openly promotes values that contradict Scripture?”
I would like to answer this honestly and biblically.
First, Scripture nowhere teaches us to support any nation based on its moral perfection. If that were the condition, there would not be a single nation left with which one could ‘stand,’ because “all have sinned” (Rom. 3:23).
Second, it is important to distinguish between:
— the modern State of Israel
— the Jewish people
— and God’s covenant purposes revealed in Scripture
God chose Israel not because of their righteousness, but because of His faithfulness (Deut. 7:7–8). Even in biblical times, the people repeatedly fell into sin, yet this did not nullify God’s plan.
Third, if one applies the principle that a nation’s moral condition determines whether it can be supported, then it must be applied consistently to all. Many Western countries that raise such objections are themselves in deep moral crisis.
Fourth, our calling as believers is not blind political support, but a biblical position:
— to bless what God has called us to bless (Gen. 12:3)
— to pray for all people, including Israel (Ps. 122:6; 1 Tim. 2:1–2)
— to stand for righteousness in every nation, including Israel
This means we do not justify sin—anywhere.
But neither do we reject God’s purposes because of human imperfection.
Finally, the New Testament clearly teaches that God’s story with Israel is not yet finished (Rom. 11).
Therefore, the main question is not:
“Is Israel morally perfect?”
But rather:
“Is God still faithful to His Word?”
And to that question, Scripture gives a clear answer.
