What does lemonade have to do with Sderot?
Great question. Keep reading and you’ll find out.
(And no, we’re not selling lemonade.)
At the opening of RiSE.Hub, Aviad Friedman, Head of the Tekuma Directorate, described Sderot in one sentence:
“It’s the city that turns lemons into lemonade.” And honestly, he captured it perfectly.
Sderot does not pretend the challenges are not there. It simply refuses to let them stand in the way.
This is a city that aims high, breaks barriers and keeps creating new possibilities across resilience, education, employment, culture and community.
Because the goal is not only to overcome challenges.
It is to reach people.
To create opportunities.
To help talent grow.
And to build something new, empowering and different.
Perhaps that is why people are drawn to Sderot.
There is something here that makes people come, and for many of them, something that makes them stay.

The warmth. The community. The people who keep thinking forward and turning ideas into action.

מה הקשר בין לימונדה לשדרות? שאלה מצוינת. תמשיכו לקרוא ותגלו. (ולא, אנחנו לא מוכרים פה לימונדה.)
אביעד פרידמן, ראש מנהלת תקומה, תיאר את שדרות במשפט אחד בחנוכת מרכז אקו סיסתם חדש שנפתח בעיר - ״זו עיר שיודעת להפוך לימונים ללימונדה״.
והאמת? הוא תפס את זה בדיוק.
שדרות לא מתעלמת מהאתגרים. זו עיר שמכוונת גבוה, שוברת מחסומים ותקרות זכוכית וממשיכה ליצור אפשרויות חדשות בתחומי החוסן, החינוך, התעסוקה, התרבות והקהילה.
כי המטרה היא לא רק להתגבר על אתגרים, אלא לגעת באנשים. ליצור הזדמנויות.

אולי זו הסיבה שאנשים נמשכים לשדרות.
יש כאן משהו שגורם לאנשים להגיע, ולרבים מהם גם לבחור להישאר. החום. הקהילה. האנשים שממשיכים לחשוב קדימה ולהפוך רעיונות לעשייה.
בקרן לפיתוח שדרות, זה בדיוק מה שאנחנו עושים ביום יום - מוצאים את החיבור בין אנשים, רעיונות ומשאבים, והופכים אותם להזדמנויות אמיתיות ולאימפקט שאפשר לראות ולהרגיש.

In Sderot, we’re building quality of life. Staying healthy, close to home.

A new advanced medical center is being built in Sderot. It will include an urgent care center with trauma rooms, specialist physicians, and advanced healthcare services for members of all HMOs.
For residents of Sderot and the surrounding area, this means more high-quality medical services close to home, without having to travel to Be’er Sheva or central Israel.

Like so many things happening in Sderot, this center is part of a much bigger story.
The Sderot Development Fund has mobilized donors and partners to help advance the construction of this important medical center and turn a real need into reality.

For Sderot to continue growing and attracting families, young people, and others who want to build their lives here, we need more than homes and jobs. We need to build a city that is truly good to live in.

Sderot continues to build its future while investing in the things that make it a place people want to choose, live in, and stay in. And the medical center is just one of them.

There are many more important and exciting developments happening in Sderot right now.

בימים אלה נבנה בשדרות מרכז רפואי חדש ומתקדם, שיכלול מרכז רפואה דחופה עם חדרי טראומה, וירכז רופאים מומחים ושירותי בריאות מתקדמים לחברי כל קופות החולים.

המשמעות היא שתושבי שדרות והאזור יוכלו לקבל יותר שירותים רפואיים איכותיים קרוב לבית, בלי לנסוע לבאר שבע או למרכז הארץ.
כמו הרבה דברים שקורים בשדרות, גם המרכז הזה הוא חלק מסיפור גדול יותר.

הקרן לפיתוח שדרות גייסה תורמים ושותפים, ומסייעת לקדם את הקמת המרכז הרפואי החשוב הזה ולהפוך צורך אמיתי למציאות.
כדי ששדרות תמשיך לצמוח ולמשוך אליה משפחות, צעירים ואנשים שרוצים לבנות כאן את החיים שלהם, צריך יותר מבתים ומקומות עבודה. צריך לבנות עיר שטוב לחיות בה.

It’s about what we choose to build now.
In Sderot, modern Zionism is happening every day.
It’s choosing to build a life, grow a business, raise a family, create opportunities and strengthen a community, right here.
Not because the challenges disappeared.
But because the future is worth building anyway.
That’s the story of Sderot.

איך נראית ציונות מודרנית היום?
היא לא עוסקת רק בסיפור של מאיפה באנו.
היא עוסקת במה שאנחנו בוחרים לבנות עכשיו.
בשדרות, ציונות מודרנית מתרחשת בכל יום.
זו הבחירה לבנות כאן חיים, להקים עסק, לגדל משפחה, ליצור הזדמנויות ולחזק קהילה.

הנה משהו שאולי יפתיע אתכם - פעם כמעט לא איתרו ילדים מחוננים בשדרות.
לא כי לא היו כאן ילדים מוכשרים, אלא כי פשוט לא חיפשו מספיק.
וכשלא מחפשים,
גם הסטטיסטיקה “סיפרה” שאין מצוינות בשדרות.

ברגע שהתחילו להשקיע באיתור מחוננים והוקם מרכז למצוינות, התמונה השתנתה.
פתאום התגלו ילדים מחוננים ומצטיינים עם המון כישרון ופוטנציאל,
שפשוט לא קיבלו קודם את ההזדמנות לבלוט.

כששמים את הזרקור, רואים את ההזדמנות.

היום, יש יותר ויותר ילדים מחוננים ומצטיינים,
והשלב הבא הוא להרחיב את הפעילות בתחום ההעשרה האקדמית והמדעים,
כדי לתת לילדים המצטיינים והמחוננים בשדרות עוד כלים, עוד אתגרים ועוד מקום לצמוח.

כי לפעמים הכישרון כבר נמצא שם. צריך רק לדעת לראות אותו.

Here’s something that might surprise you:
For years, very few gifted children were identified in Sderot.
Not because the talent wasn’t there, but simply because no one was looking closely enough.

And when you don’t look, the statistics can make it seem as though excellence doesn’t exist.

Once more effort was put into identifying gifted students and a Center for Excellence was established, the picture changed. Suddenly, gifted and high-achieving children with incredible talent and potential began to stand out,
children who had simply not been given that opportunity before.

Shine a spotlight, and you see the opportunity.

Today, more and more gifted and high-achieving children are being identified.
The next step is to expand programs in science and academic enrichment,
giving Sderot’s students more tools, more challenges and more room to grow.

Because sometimes the talent is already there.
You just need to know how to see it.

We are proud to mark the opening of RiSE.Hub, a new center for innovation in health, resilience and mental wellbeing.
RiSE.Hub Sderot brings together entrepreneurs, researchers, healthcare professionals, companies and public partners to develop new tools and technologies for mental health, rehabilitation, emergency preparedness and community resilience.

But the heart of this center is not technology alone.
It is people. The residents and professionals of Sderot know these challenges closely. Over the years, they have gained knowledge, developed practical responses and built a community that knows how to keep moving forward.

RiSE.Hub Sderot, gives that knowledge a home. It connects local experience with talent, research and resources, and turns it into solutions.

אנחנו גאים ונרגשים לציין את חנוכת RiSE.Hub Sderot, מרכז חדשנות בתחומי הבריאות, החוסן והרווחה הנפשית.

What can a turtle teach us about feeling safe? 🐢 עברית ↓
At Itamar’s Home, Sderot’s unique animal-assisted therapy center, something special happens.

When children meet Zelda the turtle, they immediately start talking about her shell.
About the place that protects her.
About when it feels safe to come out, and where they themselves feel protected.

That is part of what makes animal-assisted therapy so powerful.
The patient also becomes the caregiver - looking after the animal, helping it, and through that responsibility and connection, gaining a sense of strength and capability.

And not everything has to be said directly.
The children and adults who come to Itamar’s Home speak to the animal and about the animal, and through that connection, another path opens up to express, process and grow stronger.

Itamar’s Home was expanded thanks to a donation from ZIM, enabling us to continue developing the center and this unique therapeutic approach.

And we have many more plans ahead.
Because when you invest in a place that helps people grow stronger, the impact reaches far beyond the walls that were built.

כשהילדים פוגשים את זלדה, הם מיד מדברים על השריון שלה.

על מתי בטוח לצאת החוצה, ואיפה הם עצמם מרגישים מוגנים.

זה אחד הדברים הייחודיים בטיפול באמצעות בעלי חיים.
המטופל הופך גם למטפל. הוא דואג לחיה, מסייע לה, ודרך האחריות והקשר נוצרת תחושת כוח ומסוגלות.
ולא תמיד צריך לדבר ישירות על הרגשות.
הילדים והמבוגרים שמגיעים לבית של איתמר מדברים עם החיה ועליה, ודרך הקשר הזה נפתחת דרך אחרת לבטא, לעבד ולהתחזק.
הבית של איתמר הורחב בזכות תרומתה של חברת ZIM, וההרחבה מאפשרת לנו להמשיך לפתח את המרכז ואת שיטת הטיפול הייחודית הזו.
ויש לנו עוד הרבה תוכניות להמשך.
כי כשמשקיעים במקום שמאפשר לאנשים להתחזק, האימפקט ממשיך הרבה מעבר לקירות שנבנו.

אהבת חינם היא לא להסכים על הכל. היא לבחור להישאר יחד. English to follow
תשעה באב מזכיר לנו כמה יקר הוא החיבור בינינו.
מותר לחשוב אחרת.
מותר להתווכח.
מותר לראות את העולם מזוויות שונות.
אבל בתוך כל זה, חשוב לזכור את העיקר:
אנחנו עם אחד. משפחה אחת. סיפור אחד.

אהבת חינם היא לא אחידות.
היא הבחירה להישאר קרובים, גם כשאנחנו לא מסכימים.
במיוחד כאן, בשדרות, אנחנו רואים כל יום כמה כוח יש לביחד.
כמה ריפוי, תקווה וצמיחה יכולים להתחיל מחיבור פשוט בין אנשים, שלא חושבים אותו דבר, אבל בוחרים לחיות ואפילו להנות, יחד.
שנזכה להרבות אהבת חינם.
Ahavat Chinam is not about agreeing on everything.
It is about choosing to stay together.
Tisha B’Av reminds us how precious the bond between us truly is.
We are allowed to think differently.
We are allowed to disagree.
We are allowed to see the world from different perspectives.
But through it all, we must remember what matters most:
We are one people.
One family.
One shared story.

Ahavat Chinam is not uniformity.
It is the choice to remain close, even when we do not agree.

Especially here, in Sderot, we see every day how powerful togetherness can be.
How much healing, hope and growth can begin with a simple human connection
between people who do not always think the same,
but still choose to live, and even find joy, together.
