A New Dawn - השחר החדש A New Dawn in the Negev is an Arab-Jewish community development organization based in Rahat, Israel. We promote education, employment, and leadership.

As a community-based organization, A New Dawn in the Negev is intrinsically attuned to the challenges and opportunities of Bedouin society from the grassroots level. The Bedouin community of Israel's Negev is a marginalized, indigenous population with low socioeconomic resources, both in relation to Israel's mainstream population and its Arab non-Bedouin counterparts. Rahat is the largest Bedouin

community in Israel and its only Bedouin city. With a population of 80,000, 66% of whom are estimated to be under the age of 18 and 80% under age 30, meaningful tools for leadership development and social engagement are of paramount importance to community development. Fueled by a passion and a vision for a better future for Rahat, Jamal Alkirnawi founded A New Dawn in 2009.

Jamal Alkirnawi shares about the work of A New Dawn in the Negev in an article by Jan Jessen :
“...Jamal Alkrinavi, however, sees his community under enormous pressure: “The current conflict is placing a heavy burden on the Bedouins.” Alkrinavi is the founder of the organization “A New Dawn in the Negev,” which works with Bedouin youth. For women and children in the villages, even the sound of a siren alone is disturbing: “It immediately creates an atmosphere of fear that reflects the strains of the last three years.”

Young people are in a particularly complicated situation also because the war began during the fasting month of Ramadan: “Fasting is a demanding spiritual journey, but this year the physical exhaustion of fasting is accompanied by a deep, gnawing uncertainty.” Many feel unprotected and forgotten because local authorities have not provided shelters and basic protective measures.

His organization is now offering a hotline and emotional support services. “We focus on giving these young people tools for calm—practical ways to cope with panic when the sirens sound.””
