Why can’t hasbara win this war?

Because Israel’s adversaries are not only fighting over narratives.
Iran, Qatar, Russia and China use very different methods (cyber operations, media influence, psychological pressure and long-term soft power), but the deeper target is often the same: trust, judgment and the way people decide what to believe.

In a new analysis, JCFA's Vice President, Aviram Bellaishe argues that Israel still treats much of this challenge as a messaging problem, while cognitive warfare works at a deeper level: overwhelming attention, triggering emotion and eroding confidence in reliable sources.

The challenge is no longer simply how Israel explains itself better, but whether it has the right structure to defend against the information war it is actually facing.

25 Years Since 9/11: Only 40% of Young Americans Attribute the Attacks to Al-Qaeda

A new survey by Dr. Irwin J. Mansdorf, a researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs (JCFA), and Dr. Charles Jacobs, President of the International Freedom Coalition, conducted on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks among 513 Americans, points to a deep generational divide in how the event is remembered. While 66% of Americans aged 45 and older attribute the attacks to Al-Qaeda, that figure drops to just 40% among those aged 18–29. In addition, 28.6% of young respondents are not sure who carried out the attacks, compared with 11.6% among older Americans.

The divide is also evident in perceptions of current threats: 20% of young Americans identify Israel/Zionists as the greatest threat capable of carrying out a 9/11-scale attack on U.S. soil, compared with just 4.9% among those aged 45 and older. By contrast, 57.5% of older respondents see Iran and radical Islamists as the primary threat.

According to Dr. Mansdorf, the survey underscores the extent to which the historical memory of 9/11 is eroding among the younger generation in the United States.

25 years after 9/11, one question remains as urgent as ever: How does someone become radicalized — and what can make them turn back?

Mubin Shaikh knows that journey from the inside.

As a young man in Canada, he embraced a jihadist worldview and reached the point of fantasizing about attacking a synagogue. Then came September 11, 2001.

His reaction to the attacks forced him to confront what he had become — beginning a journey that would eventually take him from radicalization to working undercover against extremists.

In this episode of East to West, Sarah Martinez-Amir speaks with Mubin about how a search for identity can become extremism, how religious texts can be manipulated to justify violence, and what 9/11 changed for him personally.

Mubin Shaikh returned to Canada believing he could help confront extremism and show people what he saw as the true meaning of Islam.

What he didn’t expect was to end up working undercover.

After returning home, he became involved in infiltration operations against jihadist networks and later played a role in the major Toronto 18 terrorism investigation.

Why are so many Hollywood stars calling for Marwan Barghouti’s release?

Javier Bardem, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett and others have joined a campaign presenting Barghouti as a political leader who should be freed.

But there is an important part of the story that is often left out.
