Juneteenth National Independence Day
On Juneteenth, we honor a transformative milestone in the journey toward freedom. On June 19, 1865, the announcement of emancipation finally reached Galveston, Texas, signaling the true conclusion of the Civil War and the liberation of all enslaved African Americans. Today, we recognize Juneteenth National Independence Day as a time to celebrate Black culture, heritage, and the enduring resilience and vital contributions of Black Americans to our nation’s history.

ב- June Nineteenthאנו מציינים אבן דרך משמעותית במסע לחירות. ב-19 ביוני 1865, הגיעה סוף סוף הבשורה על האמנציפציה לגלווסטון, טקסס, ובכך סימנה את סיומה האמיתי של מלחמת האזרחים ואת שחרורם של אפרו-אמריקאים משועבדים.

85 years ago today, Romanian PM Ion Antonescu ordered the forced evacuation of Jews from rural towns. By July 31, 1941, 40,000 Jews were driven from 441 villages—interned in camps, sent to forced labor, and stripped of their property, which was nationalized or looted.

WJRO honors the victims today and continues the fight for historical justice and property restitution.

היום לפני 85 שנה, הורה ראש ממשלת רומניה, יון אנטונסקו, על פינוי כפוי של יהודים מאיזורים כפריים. עד 31 ביולי 1941, כ-40,000 יהודים גורשו מ-441 כפרים, נכלאו במחנות, נשלחו לעבודות כפייה, ורכושם הולאם או נשדד.
היום, ארגון איל"ר מכבד את זכר הקורבנות וממשיך במאבק למען צדק היסטורי והשבת רכוש.

Today marks a somber milestone. 85 years ago, on June 14, 1941, the Soviet regime initiated mass deportations across the Baltic States. Nearly 60,000 innocent citizens from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia were torn from their homes, stripped of their property, and exiled to labor camps and special settlements, primarily in Siberia.
As we commemorate this 85th anniversary, WJRO remembers the lives disrupted and lost, honors the enduring resilience of the Baltic communities, and reaffirms our commitment to pursuing justice and the restitution of wrongfully seized property.

ה-14 ביוני מציין אבן דרך קודרת. לפני 85 שנה, ב-14 ביוני 1941, החל המשטר הסובייטי בגירושים המוניים ברחבי המדינות הבלטיות. קרוב ל-60,000 אזרחים חפים מפשע מליטא, לטביה ואסטוניה נעקרו מבתיהם, רכושם נלקח מהם, והם הוגלו למחנות עבודה ולהתיישבויות מיוחדות, בעיקר בסיביר.
בציון יום השנה ה-85, ארגון איל"ר זוכר את החיים שנקטעו והושפעו, מוקיר את עמידותן המתמשכת של הקהילות הבלטיות, ומחדש את המחויבות לקידום הצדק והשבת רכוש שנגזל שלא כדין.

The room also, according to Gideon Taylor, the president of the World Jewish Restitution Organization, “sends a strong message about the commitment of France” three years after the country adopted a law enabling the restitution of goods looted from Jewish families.

A new room in the Musée d’Orsay’s permanent display includes 13 pieces that were recovered from Germany and Austria after World War II and whose provenance is unknown.

Yom Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem Day, is an Israeli national holiday commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War. Observed on the 28th of the Hebrew month of Iyar, it is marked in Israel with state ceremonies, memorial services, and public celebrations.

WJRO President Gideon Taylor (l) and COO Mark Weitzman (center left) met today with Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni () (R) to discuss cultural property and to view Jewish artifacts whose return from Poland was facilitated by WJRO. They were shown at a ceremony at the National Gallery of Greece by Zanet Battinou, (center right) Director of the Jewish Museum of Athens,(). These important items represent a meaningful step in WJRO’s ongoing efforts to restore and preserve Jewish cultural heritage.
