As the father-in law of Rav Mijael Even-David, the Rabbi of the Masorati Congregation Eshel Avraham in Beersheva (קהילת אשל אברהם, the father of Raya Even-David, and my four grandchildren, I am proud to be an Ambassador for their New Year's Campaign for Eshel Avraham to install two bomb shelters, to expand their Bnei Mitzvah outreach program and to strengthen their support for New Immigrants (yes they are still coming!)
At the bottom are the ways to contribute. I gave 1800 nis (close to $500.) Someone else already gave $5000! We are a third of the wa y towards our goal. Please join me and feel free to dedicate your contribution in honor or memory of whomever you choose.
THE CASE: Since October 7, 2023, hundreds of rockets have been fired towards Be’er Sheva. We found ourselves subjected to near-daily air sirens and running to safe rooms and shelters for safety. Many of our family members, friends, and relatives have been called to emergency reserve duty.
Eshel Avraham has emerged from shock and grief to “emergency response mode” both for our members and the broader community all of us severely affected by the economic consequences of the war. Thus,, we have begun a New Year’s campaign to raise the funds required to meet the needs for safety, for outreach to Bar and Bat Mitzvah teens and for assistance to our very vulnerable new immigrants.
Please designate your confribution for one or all of these critical projects:
1. Bomb Shelters/Safe Rooms for Pre-Schools and Synagogue -
During a rocket attack Be’er Sheva residents have only 60 seconds to reach a protected space. Eshel Avraham’s Shabbat services host an average of 100+ attendees, and, on weekdays, our pre-school system operates seven classrooms of over 170 children (ranging in age from 3 months to 5 years). Put simply, our existing facilities cannot safely accommodate our preschoolers and synagogue members. We have committed to building two (2) additional bomb shelters/safe rooms to ensure that everyone at Eshel Avraham, especially the preschoolers, can be safe in the event of a rocket attack.
The cost of each bomb shelter/safe room is $42,500. (A gift of $25,000 will name the room for the donor or loved ones, gifts of $1,800 or more will be listed on the plaque.)
2. B’nei/B’not Mitzvah Education -
Eshel Avraham provides an outlet for local families seeking a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony in a welcoming, egalitarian space. Every year, we educate and host about 10-15 B’nei/B’not Mitzvah through months-long courses that provide crucial Jewish education and culminate in a warm, fulfilling ceremony marking this vital life event. We have committed to raising funds to enhance our B’nei/B’not Mitzvah educational materials and in order to reach even more members of the Be'er Sheva community.
The cost of each Bar/Bet Mitzvah course per participant is $1,000.
3, Assistance to New Immigrants -
Eshel Avraham provides a welcoming, pluralistic Jewish home to new immigrants (olim) arriving in Israel. Our members include olim from Latin America, the U.S., the FSU, and the world over who have found a warm embrace in our congregational family.
Our community provides Hebrew courses, enrichment events, and help with navigating bureaucracy and the language barrier to countless olim on an ongoing basis. Members of our congregation volunteer to help the olim, but we also hire teachers and counselors for our olim program.
$360 would cover the cost of a teacher’s salary for a two-month period.
