At the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council, under Agenda Item 3, the Jerusalem Institute of Justice challenged the Commission of Inquiry's latest report for its bias and methodological distortions — calling on the Council to demand factual rigor, legal precision, and moral clarity in holding terrorist organizations accountable.

Deterrence is often discussed as a military concept. For Israel, it is far more fundamental: it is the condition that allows ordinary life to exist in an extraordinary security reality.

Peace is not preserved by intentions alone. It depends on the credible understanding that aggression will carry a real and unavoidable cost. When that understanding disappears, violence is encouraged. When it is restored, the strategic balance begins to change.

BREAKING NEWS: UN Torture Rapporteur: October 7 Evidence Was “Watered Down”

UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Dr. Alice Edwards says she faced weeks of pressure and attempts to weaken a formal UN letter documenting allegations from the October 7 attacks.

Speaking at UCL in London in a conversation with barrister Adam Wagner KC, Edwards said several UN mandate-holders wanted to sign the letter — but were “bullied” into backing away. She said the final version “shrank considerably” after a campaign to prevent key allegations from being placed on the UN record.

Edwards, whose mandate covers all victims of torture, personally reviewed evidence, met hostage families, and visited communities attacked on October 7. Her conclusion is clear: hostage-taking can amount to torture — and every victim deserves to be documented, recognized, and heard.

At a time when the UN’s credibility is under growing scrutiny, her testimony exposes a disturbing reality: even recording the horrors of October 7 became a political battle.

You think you know what happened on October 7th.
But have you heard it from the people who were there?

No political speeches. No distant commentary. No one is speaking on behalf of the victims.

"Saturday October 7" brings together the documented stories of seven survivors — told in their own words, through their own memories, and from the places where their lives changed forever.

They take you beyond the headlines and the images seen around the world — into the fear, the impossible choices, the devastating loss, and the fight to survive.

This is not another film explaining October 7 from a distance.
It is a direct encounter with the people who lived through it.

You may believe you already know the story.
This film will show you how much remains unheard.

Don’t scroll past their testimony. Watch the film.

⚖️ Can a son and daughter receive equal shares while still respecting Halacha?

The answer is yes — but not through a standard will alone. A carefully structured halachic will can use recognized legal and halachic mechanisms to create an equal outcome without changing the traditional laws of inheritance.

In this LAW & MORE post, JIJ lawyers explain how civil and halachic planning can work together — and why precise drafting is essential.

📌 Swipe through to understand how advance planning can protect both your wishes and your values.

⚠️ This post is for informational purposes only and does not replace legal or rabbinic advice. Every case should be reviewed by a qualified inheritance lawyer and competent rabbinic authority.

On this day in 2014, Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaer, and Eyal Yifrach were abducted while trying to get home.

Three boys. Three families. A wound Israel still carries.

Even their release was not allowed to be dignified.

Hostages who had already survived captivity were led through crowds, cameras, and armed captors before finally reaching safety.

This was not a normal handover.
It was a staged spectacle.

Under the Geneva Conventions, people in captivity must be protected from humiliation, degrading treatment, and public curiosity.

Hamas did not only hold hostages.
It used them — even in the final moments before release.

JIJ’s report KIDNAPPED: Hostage-Taking as a Form of Torture documents how propaganda videos, public humiliation, and staged releases became part of a broader system of abuse.

This week, our Legal Aid Department made a very special visit.

We travelled to a therapeutic farm in the desert called "Ei shel Sheket" — a place that has become a true home for soldiers and civilians coping with PTSD and trauma from wars, October 7th, and beyond. The farm is run by a devoted couple, one of whom lives with trauma from the October 7th events himself. What they've built there is something rare: a space where people don't need to explain their pain — because they're surrounded by others who feel it too.

During our visit, we learned that many of the people there don't know the rights they're entitled to — and struggle to navigate complex systems on their own. That's where we come in.

We introduced our organization, discussed how we can support residents in claiming their rights, and scheduled a joint evening to meet the community face to face.

Our legal help is completely free. If you or someone you know could benefit — reach out. No one should fight alone. 💙

A hostage video is never just a video.

When Israeli hostages were filmed by Hamas — wounded, frightened, exhausted, surrounded by armed men, or forced to speak under captivity — their suffering was turned into a weapon.

These videos were not “proof of life.”
They were psychological warfare.

They were meant to pressure families, manipulate public opinion, and turn human beings into propaganda.

International law is clear: people in captivity must be protected from humiliation, degrading treatment, and public curiosity.

JIJ’s report KIDNAPPED: Hostage-Taking as a Form of Torture documents how Hamas used videos, staged spectacles, and public humiliation as part of a broader system of abuse.

Justice cannot work by double standards.

For almost two years, survivors of Hamas captivity spoke publicly about sexual violence, humiliation, and abuse. Their testimonies were documented. Their names were known. The evidence existed.

Yet the international system moved slowly.

Now, Israel has been placed on the same UN blacklist as Hamas — a decision Israel has condemned as political, distorted, and disconnected from the facts.

This is exactly why legal standards must be applied consistently.

Sexual violence in captivity is not a grey area. Under international law, it can amount to torture.

JIJ’s report KIDNAPPED: Hostage-Taking as a Form of Torture documents the testimonies, evidence, and legal framework the world was too slow to confront.

Don’t let the crime be minimized.
