Oriya Brodutch was four years old when he was taken hostage from his home on October 7.

At an age when safety should have meant family, routine, and childhood, he was forced into captivity alongside his mother and siblings — torn from everything familiar and placed in a reality no child should ever experience.

He answered the calls.
Then the voices never left him.

On October 7, our client — an Israeli police officer and father of three — commanded the Police Command and Control Center. He was not physically present at the massacre sites, but he was exposed to the horror in real time through emergency calls, live operational communications, and digital monitoring systems.

He heard civilians, parents, children, and entire families fighting to survive. He helped coordinate the response while witnessing the atrocities unfold from behind the screens.

The trauma followed him home.

He developed severe, diagnosed, and ongoing PTSD that deeply affected his mental health, his marriage, and his family life.

With JIJ’s legal representation, the Ministry of Defense recognized that real-time digital exposure to the horrors of October 7 caused severe psychological trauma. He was granted full and permanent disability recognition.

This is a groundbreaking decision — not only for one police officer, but for many others who were wounded by October 7 without being physically present at the scene.

Psychological wounds are real wounds.
They must be seen.
They must be recognized.
And they must be treated with the dignity they deserve.

Or Elmakias came to Nova not as a festivalgoer, but to work. By 6:10 that morning, her shift was over. Less than twenty minutes later, the sky filled with rockets — and within the hour, she was running for her life.

Eleven years.

That is how long one family had to wait for the right to live with dignity, stability, and security in Israel.

Avram, an Israeli citizen from the Ethiopian community living in Jerusalem, traveled to Ethiopia to visit his family. There, he met Busna. They fell in love, got married, and were expecting their first child.

But instead of being allowed to begin their life together in Israel, they were met with a bureaucratic wall.

The Population Authority refused to allow Busna to enter Israel to begin the family reunification process and demanded additional proof regarding Avram’s paternity.

JIJ stepped in, filed the necessary legal request in Israel, and began the process of recognizing Avram as the father of the unborn child. Only after a court order was granted were we able to help bring Busna and the baby to Israel.

The struggle did not end there. The application was difficult, key documents were missing, and the family faced years of uncertainty.

But we did not give up.

After an 11-year legal battle, Busna has finally received her Israeli ID and Israeli passport.

This is more than a legal success. It is a family finally recognized. A life finally stabilized. A future finally secured.

Rom Braslavski was 19 when he was taken from Nova. He came home more than two years later carrying experiences he has said were among the hardest to speak about.

What makes his testimony so powerful is not only what he endured, but the fact that he chose to describe it publicly — including the parts designed to humiliate and silence him.

Rom’s voice now stands as part of the record of what captivity meant, and of the abuse that male hostages can endure but rarely speak about.

Keith Siegel’s testimony describes a reality of starvation, deprivation, humiliation, and abuse — conditions designed not only to confine a person, but to break them.

For former hostages like Emily Damari, coming home did not erase the damage of captivity. Freedom ended the confinement, but not the injuries, the surgeries, or the physical consequences she will continue to carry.
This is why remembering October 7 cannot stop at the moment of release. The aftermath is part of the story too.
