P'til Tekhelet - The Association for the Promotion and Distribution of Tekhelet - is a non-profit organization based in Israel. P'til Tekhelet provides educational programming and resources pertaining to tekhelet, and produces tekhelet for tzitzit. The association is comprised of a small group of individuals whose work is done lishma - for the express purpose of making tzitzit as the halakha requires.

החודש לפני כ-300 שנים נפטר המדען ההולנדי אנטוני ואן לוונהוק, שהיה המדען הראשון שהצליח לצפות בחיידקים באמצעות מיקרוסקופ! בהתחלה לא האמינו לו, חשבו שהוא שוגה, והטילו ספק בממצאיו. אבל עם הזמן, תפיסתו התפשטה והיום היא המיינסטרים המדעי המקובל בעולם המדע והרפואה. וכן, גם כשהתגלתה האפשרות להפיק תכלת מארגמון קהה קוצים, היה מי שפקפק באמינות הממצאים בהתחלה, אך ב"ה, משנה לשנה, התכלת רק הופכת למקובלת יותר ויותר!

This month, about 300 years ago, the Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek passed away - he was the first scientist to succeed in observing bacteria through a microscope! At first, people didn't believe him; they thought he was mistaken, and they cast doubt on his findings. But over time, his view spread and today it is the accepted scientific mainstream in the world of science and medicine. And indeed, when the possibility of producing Tekhelet from the Murex trunculus snail was discovered, there were also those who doubted the reliability of the findings at first, but thank God, year by year, Tekhelet is only becoming more and more accepted!

וככה כתב אורי: "'וְנָתְנוְּ עַל צִיצִת הַכָּנָף פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת'. מזה כ-39 שנה, כל בוקר חול מאז הבר המצווה, התעטפתי באותה טלית. לאחרונה סימני הזמן נתנו בה אותותיהם, והייתי חייב לרכוש טלית חדשה. הופתעתי למצוא טלית עם פתיל תכלת! כמה זה מרגש שידע שאבד לעם ישראל לפני כ-1,300 שנה, חזר בזכות המחקר והמדע, ויהודי יכול שוב לקיים מצוות ציצית המקורית, ככתבה ולשונה". מרגש ומשמח לשמוע על עוד יהודי שהתחיל ללכת עם תכלת! 🥹

And this is what Uri wrote: "'And they shall put on the tzitzit of the corner a thread of tekhelt.' For about 39 years, every weekday morning since my bar mitzvah, I have wrapped myself in the same tallit. Recently, the signs of time had taken their toll on it, and I had to buy a new tallit. I was surprised to find a tallit with a thread of Tekhelet! How moving that knowledge lost to the Jewish people about 1,300 years ago has been restored thanks to research and science, and a Jew can once again fulfill the original mitzvah of tzitzit, exactly as it is written." Pretty amazing, right? It's exciting and heartwarming to hear about another Jew who has started wearing Tekhelet! 🥹

אם אין אף אות מיותרת בתורה, למה מצוות ציצית נזכרת פעמיים? כן, פעם אחת בפרשת שלח לך: "וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִת עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם לְדֹרֹתָם, וְנָתְנוּ עַל צִיצִת הַכָּנָף פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת", ופעם אחת בפרשתנו: "גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ עַל אַרְבַּע כַּנְפוֹת כְּסוּתְךָ אֲשֶׁר תְּכַסֶּה בָּהּ". רבנו בחיי מסביר שהכפילות מכוונת: "כדי שלא יחשוב היחיד להפטר ממנה בכלל הרבים... לכך יחזור וידבר עם כל יחיד ויחיד".

בכך מלמדת אותנו התורה יסוד גדול: אדם לא רשאי להתחבא בתוך הציבור ולומר "מישהו אחר יקיים, אני חלק מהכלל". כל מצווה, כל שליחות בחיים, פונה אליי באופן אישי ואינה ניתנת להעברה. הציצית שעל כנפות הבגד מזכירה לאדם לא רק את המצוות, אלא גם את זה שהוא איננו מספר בתוך קהל, אלא נקרא בשמו. שבת שלום!

If not a single letter in the Torah is superfluous, why is the mitzvah of tzitzit mentioned twice? Indeed, once in Parashat Shelach: "They shall make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and they shall put on the fringe of each corner a thread of Tekhelet," and once in our own parasha: "You shall make yourself twisted cords on the four corners of your covering, with which you cover yourself." Rabbeinu Bechaye explains that the repetition is deliberate: "so that the individual should not think he is exempted by being part of the many... therefore it returns and speaks to each and every individual."

In this, the Torah teaches us a great principle: a person is not allowed to hide within the crowd and say, "someone else will fulfill it, I'm just part of the group." Every mitzvah, every mission in life, addresses me personally, and cannot be delegated. The tzitzit on the corners of the garment reminds a person not only of the mitzvot, but also of this: that he is not a number within a crowd, but is called by his own name. Shabbat Shalom!

האם הוא היה הולך עם תכלת אם הוא היה חי בדורנו? קשה לדעת, אך הרב אברהם יצחק הכהן קוק זצ"ל, שהיום הוא היארצייט שלו, כתב על המצווה המופלאה בערגה וייחל לקיומה.

"הראייה של פתיל התכלת, הדומה לים, לרקיע, ולכיסא הכבוד", הוא כתב בפירושו לסידור, "מזכירה אותנו את מצוות ד’, מעודדת בנו את הזכר הרוחני של קדושת המצוות, את האורה האלוהית המתפלשת דרך כל המעברים של הנשמה, המתלבשת בהוד הקודש של התגלות החיים האלוהיים, המתפרצת להתגלות במעשי המצוות כולם, כשם שכל הופעת החיים מתגלה בפרטי המעשים הטבעיים, הבאים מכל תפקידי החיים כולם".

במילים פשוטות, הרב קוק אומר שמצוות התכלת אינה רק פרט טכני בציצית, אלא אמצעי לעורר באדם את הזיכרון הרוחני של המצוות. כאשר האדם רואה את התכלת, המראה שלה מעורר בו תחושה של קדושה ושל הקשר שלו לאלוקים. כלומר, התכלת משמשת מעין "תזכורת מוחשית" לעולם הרוחני.

ואולי בדיוק בשל כך, מי שמזכה עצמו היום בלבישת תכלת, ממשיך את הערגה שבה כתב הרב קוק - ומגשים אותה!

Would he have worn Tekhelet if he lived in our generation? It's hard to know, but Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, of blessed memory, whose yahrzeit is today, wrote about this wondrous commandment with longing, hoping for its fulfillment.

"The sight of the Tekhelet thread, resembling the sea, the sky, and the Throne of Glory," he wrote in his commentary on the siddur, "reminds us of God's commandments, awakening within us the spiritual remembrance of the holiness of the mitzvot, the divine light that streams through all the passageways of the soul, clothed in the sacred majesty of the revelation of divine life, bursting forth to manifest itself in the observance of all the commandments - just as every expression of life reveals itself in the details of natural actions, arising from all of life's functions."

In simple terms, Rabbi Kook is saying that the mitzvah of Tekhelet isn't merely a technical detail of tzitzit, but a means of awakening within a person the spiritual memory of the commandments. When a person sees the Tekhelet, its appearance stirs in him a sense of holiness and of his connection to God. In other words, the Tekhelet serves as a kind of "tangible reminder" of the spiritual world.

Perhaps precisely for this reason, whoever merits wearing Tekhelet today continues the longing that Rabbi Kook wrote about - and brings it to fulfillment.

חודש אלול מתחיל וזה, הזמן לצלול לעומק. באלול "אפילו הדגים שבים רועדים" מאימת יום הדין. איך הופכים את הרעד הזה לתיקון? התשובה טמונה, אולי, במצוות התכלת. התכלת מופקת מחילזון הבא ממעמקי הים, וצבעה מזכיר את הים – הים מזכיר את הרקיע, והרקיע מזכיר את כיסא הכבוד. כך גם אנחנו: מתוך הרעד והיראה שבמעמקים, נפתח פתח להתבוננות, לקרבת אלוהים ולתשובה מתוך אהבה. שיהיה חודש טוב ומרומם! 🧵

The month of Elul is beginning, and it's time to dive deep. During Elul, "even the fish in the sea tremble" from fear of the Day of Judgment. How do we turn that trembling into transformation? The answer may lie in the mitzvah of Tekhelet. Tekhelet is extracted from a sea creature found in the depths of the ocean, and its color resembles the sea – the sea resembles the sky, and the sky resembles the Throne of Glory. So it is with us: from the trembling and awe of the depths, a path opens toward reflection, closeness to God, and Teshuva (return) rooted in love. May it be a good and uplifting month! 🧵

Would you be willing to try crossing an ocean on a raft made of tree trunks? That's exactly what the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl did, along with four other sailors, almost 80 years ago this week. The goal? To prove it was possible. Sometimes the only way to prove something is to actually do it. That's also what we did with Ptil Tekhelet: almost 40 years ago, we set out on a journey after the tekhelet snail, which ended in proof that it's possible - you really can dye Tekhelet using the Murex trunculus, just as our ancestors did hundreds of years ago, in order to fulfill the mitzvah of tzitzit in its entirety. בפרשת השבוע, פרשת ראה, התורה מפרטת את סימני הכשרות: מעלה גרה ומפריסה פרסה ביבשה, סנפיר וקשקשת בים. בעולם הימי, הנסתר מעין, מסתתר יצור שכל כולו סוד: חילזון התכלת. הוא לא "כשר" לאכילה, אבל כן "כשר" לתכלת שמצווים עליה בציצית. יצור קטן, מוסווה היטב בין הסלעים, שדורש סבלנות ועין מיומנת כדי לאתר אותו. התורה מלמדת אותנו להבחין, לבדוק סימנים ולא להסתפק במראה החיצוני. וגם חיפוש התכלת עצמו הוא תרגיל בהבחנה - להסתכל טוב, מתחת לפני השטח, כדי לגלות את מה שמסתתר. שבת שלום! 🤓

In this week's Torah portion, Parashat Re'eh, the Torah spells out the signs of kosher animals: chewing the cud and having split hooves on land, fins and scales in the sea. In the hidden world of the sea lies a creature that's all mystery: the tekhelet snail. It's not "kosher" for eating, but it is "kosher" for the tekhelet dye commanded for tzitzit. A small creature, well camouflaged among the rocks, that takes patience and a trained eye to spot. The Torah teaches us to discern, to check the signs, not to settle for outward appearances. And the search for tekhelet itself is an exercise in discernment - looking closely, beneath the surface, to uncover what's hidden. Shabbat Shalom! 🤓
