P'til Tekhelet - The Association for the Promotion and Distribution of Tekhelet - is a non-profit organization based in Israel. P'til Tekhelet provides educational programming and resources pertaining to tekhelet, and produces tekhelet for tzitzit. The association is comprised of a small group of individuals whose work is done lishma - for the express purpose of making tzitzit as the halakha requires.

התכלת היא לא רק פתיל, היא גם סמל - לכך שכל אחד מאיתנו הוא שליח של ה' בעולם. קרח לא הצליח לפצח את הסוד הזה, אבל התכלת היא אמירה: לא צריך טלית שכולה תכלת, לא צריך להפריד שמיים מארץ! כל אחד מאיתנו יכול להביא רוחניות לעולם ולחבר שמיים וארץ. שבת שלום!

Tekhelet is not just a thread - it's also a symbol. A symbol that each one of us is God's messenger in this world. Korach failed to grasp this secret, but the tekhelet carries a message: you don't need a tallit made entirely of tekhelet, you don't need to separate heaven and earth! Each one of us can bring spirituality into the world and connect heaven and earth. Shabbat Shalom!

השבוע לפני יותר מ-240 שנה, האחים מונגולפייה הדגימו לראשונה בהיסטוריה הטסת כדור פורח. האדם תמיד שאף אל השמיים, גם אם זה היה כרוך בסכנה. התכלת משכה אותו מעלה-מעלה. זכינו, כעם, שלכל אחד מאיתנו יש קצת תכלת בהישג יד. ב"ה!

This week, over 240 years ago, the Montgolfier brothers made history with the first-ever hot air balloon flight. Humanity has always yearned for the skies, even when it meant facing danger; the vast blue has always pulled us upward. As a nation, we are fortunate that each of us has a little bit of that blue within reach. Thank God!

במדבר, בני ישראל הביטו בענן הפיזי כדי לדעת מתי לחנות ולנסוע. כיום, פתיל התכלת בציצית מחליף את המבט הזה: "וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם". התכלת היא עמוד הענן המודרני שלנו – מצפן ויזואלי ויומיומי, שמנחה את הנפש ומורה לנו את הדרך במסע החיים 😎

In the desert, the Children of Israel looked to the physical cloud to know when to camp and when to journey on. Today, the blue thread of Tekhelet in the tzitzit takes the place of that gaze: "You shall see it and remember." The Tekhelet is our modern pillar of cloud – a visual, everyday compass that guides the soul and shows us the way on the journey of life 😎

השבוע לפני 35 שנה החל מבצע שלמה, להבאתם של 14,000 יהודי ביתא ישראל מאתיופיה לישראל. במבצע נקבע שיא גינס למספר הנוסעים במטוס אחד: למטוס עלו 1,086 עולים, אך במהלך הטיסה נולדו שני תינוקות, ובארץ נחתו 1,088 עולים חדשים! ואי אפשר בלי קשר לציצית: כידוע, יהודי אתיופיה לא נהגו להטיל ציציות בארבע כנפות בגדיהם. מדוע? לפי אחד ההסברים היה זה בשל רדיפות הגויים. אולם ככלל, יהודי אתיופיה דבקו במסורת ישראל, שמרו על זהותם למרות הקושי ונותרו איתנים באמונתם! ומתוך כך, גם זכו לעלות לארץ ישראל! איזו עוצמה רוחנית מרשימה! 🥹

Thirty-five years ago this week, Operation Solomon began – the airlift of 14,000 Ethiopian Jews of the Beta Israel community to Israel. The operation set a Guinness World Record for the most passengers on a single aircraft: 1,086 immigrants boarded the plane, but during the flight two babies were born, and 1,088 new immigrants landed in Israel!

And there's even a tzitzit connection. As is well known, Ethiopian Jews did not have the custom of attaching tzitzit to the four corners of their garments. Why not? One explanation is that it was due to persecution. Nevertheless, Ethiopian Jews as a whole held firmly to Jewish tradition, preserved their identity despite tremendous hardship, and remained steadfast in their faith – and by virtue of that, they merited making Aliyah to the Land of Israel. What incredible strength! 🥹

התורה והמצוות הן מתנה יקרה, אבל אפילו המתנה היקרה ביותר עלולה להתמוסס בשקט לתוך שגרת היומיום. לכן ייעדה התורה את התכלת שבציצית לתזכורת יומית, שתשיב אותנו אל עצמנו ואל מה שאנו שואפים להיות.

המדרש מגלה לנו מדוע דווקא בד זה נבחר: התכלת משקפת את צבעה הכחול של אבן הספיר, האבן שממנה נחצבו לוחות הברית. כל מבט בפתילים המיוחדים הללו מחבר אותנו מחדש להר סיני ולמתן תורה.

יותר מאלף שנה התכלת הייתה אבודה לעם ישראל. אך כיום, שוב אנו יכולים להטיל תכלת בציציותינו – ולחזק את הקשר שלנו לה' ולחיים של תורה ומצוות. חג שמח!

Our Torah is a precious gift, yet even the greatest of gifts can fade quietly into the rhythm of daily life. The Torah designated the Tekhelet of tzitzit as our daily reminder, calling us back to who we are and who we aspire to be.

The Midrash reveals why this fabric was chosen: Tekhelet mirrors the blue of the Sapir stone, the very material from which the Luchot were hewn. Each glance at these precious strings reconnects us to Har Sinai and the giving of the Torah.

For over a thousand years, Tekhelet was lost to the Jewish People. Today, we can once again wear Tekhelet on our tzitzit - and strengthen our connection to Hashem and a life of mitzvot. Chag Shamech!

הידעת? שמה של התכלת בשפות זרות רבות,Azur, מקורו בשמה הפרסי של אבן החן לפיס לזולי, Lāžaward, שהוא גם שמו של האזור הגאוגרפי שבו כרו את האבן היקרה באותם ימים רחוקים 🤓

Did you know? The word for the color azure in many languages originates from the Persian name for the gemstone lapis lazuli - Lāžaward - which was also the name of the geographic region where the precious stone was mined in those distant times 🤓

Students from the Kiryat Shmona Hesder Yeshiva visited our new educational center last Friday. They attended an online lesson by Rabbi Rimon, learned about the story of the Tekhelet, and left with brand new tzitzit strings!
