This Shabbat, 29 Tishrei, is the yahrzeit of Shimon HaTzaddik, the High Priest.

He served in the Second Temple for forty years and was one of the last of the Men of the Great Assembly, the sages who gave us the structure of our prayers after the return from Babylon.

The Talmud (Yoma 69a) tells how he walked out all night in the High Priest's garments to meet Alexander the Great, who had promised the Temple to its enemies. Alexander saw him and bowed. The Temple was saved, and the day, 25 Tevet, was set as a day of celebration.

The Talmud (Yoma 39) records the signs that came during his years: the lot for Hashem in his right hand every Yom Kippur, the crimson thread turning white, the western lamp of the Menorah burning on its own. After he passed away, the kohanim stopped saying Hashem's explicit Name in the priestly blessing. The generation no longer felt worthy of it.

His words open the second mishnah of Pirkei Avot, and every Jewish child learns them: the world stands on three things, on Torah, on the service of Hashem, and on acts of kindness.
