Zachary Baumel Z"L was born in Brooklyn, New York, and made aliyah with his family in 1970, settling in Kiryat Motzkin. After high school, he joined the Hesder program, combining studies at Yeshivat Har Etzion with service in the IDF Armored Corps.

When the First Lebanon War broke out in 1982, Zachary was called up to serve with his unit. On June 11, 1982, during the Battle of Sultan Yacoub, he and five fellow soldiers were declared missing in action.

For nearly 37 years, his family and the nation waited for answers. In 2019, Zachary's remains were returned to Israel, allowing his mother Miriam, sister Osna, and brother Shimon to finally lay him to rest on Mount Herzl. His father, Yona, did not live to see his son's return.

Yaakov “Kobi” Mandell was born in Jerusalem to Rabbi Seth and Sherri. He spent part of his childhood in the United States before returning to Israel with his family, who eventually settled in Tekoa.

On May 8, 2001, Kobi and his friend Yosef Ishran went hiking near Tekoa, where they were attacked by terrorists and brutally stoned to death. They were buried in Kfar Etzion. In Kobi’s memory, his parents established the Koby Mandell Foundation, which provides support, healing programs, and community for families coping with the loss of loved ones to terror and war.
