The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies fosters curiosity-driven collaborative research and independent intellectual exchange.

The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) is a national institution devoted to academic research in physics, mathematics, the life sciences, economics, and comparative religion. Located at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the IIAS is a self-governing body, both in its administrative function as well as its academic pursuits. The primary function of the Institute is to encourage and support collaborative research.

Open Call for IIAS–NLI Individual Fellowship | 2028–2029

The National Library of Israel and the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies invite established scholars with tenured positions at academic or research institutions outside Israel to apply for a joint fellowship for the 2028–2029 academic year.
Research proposals may focus on Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, Islam and Middle Eastern Studies, Music, and the General Humanities. Preference will be given to projects that make use of the National Library of Israel’s special collections.
Fellows will divide their residency between the neighboring NLI and IIAS in Jerusalem. Residencies are available for 5 or 10 months.

Open Call for Individual Fellowships | 2028–2029

The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies invites scholars from Israel and abroad to submit proposals for an Individual Fellowship for the 2028–2029 academic year.
The fellowship is open to tenured scholars across all research disciplines. Fellows may apply for a 5- or 10-month residency at the IIAS in Jerusalem, where they are provided with an academic environment designed to support focused and original research.

Open Call for Research Groups | 2028–2029
The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies invites scholars from Israel and abroad to submit Research Group proposals for the 2028–2029 academic year.
Research proposals may cover any topic from all disciplines, including interdisciplinary research, and should seek to be innovative with potential impact on their research field. Each Research Group brings together scholars around research questions of common interest, fostering integrative thinking, dialogue, and collaborative research.

The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies mourns the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and one of Israel’s most influential scientists.

Prof. Yonath transformed our understanding of the ribosome through pioneering structural research, work that earned her the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and helped reveal how some antibiotics act at the molecular level. Her scientific journey became a remarkable example of curiosity, courage and perseverance — pursuing questions others considered nearly impossible and continuing until they yielded new understanding.
Over the years, Prof. Yonath was also part of the scientific life of IIAS, participating in conferences and Advanced Schools in the Life Sciences and sharing her work with researchers and students from Israel and around the world.

Her scientific legacy extends far beyond the discoveries for which she was recognized. She leaves behind an example of what can happen when a researcher is willing to ask ambitious questions — and persist in searching for answers.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, colleagues, students and the wider scientific community.
May her memory be a blessing.
