Jews and Christians in the Early Centuries: A Memorial Symposium in Memory of Prof. David Rokeah

On January 1, the IIAS hosted a memorial symposium marking the first anniversary of the passing of David Rokeah, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a renowned expert in Ancient History.

The evening was organized by the Department of History and the Department of the History of the Jewish People and Contemporary Jewry. It brought together scholars to honor Prof. Rokeah's profound legacy in the study of Greco-Roman history and the Jewish experience during the Second Temple, Mishnah, and Talmud periods.

The symposium was chaired by Prof. Ayelet Even-Ezra, with opening remarks from Prof. Yitzhak Hen (Director of the IIAS) and Dr. Oded Zinger. The program featured lectures by Prof. Moshe David Herr, Prof. Albert Baumgarten, Prof. Oded Irshai, and Prof. Daniel Schwartz, reflecting the remarkable breadth of Prof. Rokeahโ€™s scholarly contributions.

Open Call | Challenges to Democracy โ€“ Spring 2027 Fellowships

The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies invites tenured scholars from Israel and abroad to apply for a fellowship as part of the multi-year research group 'Challenges to Democracy'.

Fellows will pursue their research at the IIAS, located on the Edmond J. Safra Campus in Jerusalem, within a vibrant academic community and with full administrative support.
International fellows receive a generous fellowship and subsidized accommodation.

Democracies worldwide are facing internal and external pressures. This research group will critically explore the rise of โ€œilliberal democracies,โ€ their structures and appeal, and re-examine the foundations and future of constitutional democracy.

The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies is delighted to welcome Dror Mishani, one of Israelโ€™s foremost writers of crime fiction, as its Author in Residence.

Best known for his series of crime fiction, featuring police inspector 'Avraham Avraham' - translated into more than 15 languages.

In 2018 film director Erick Zonca took his novel The Missing File as a basis for Black Tide (Fleuve noir) featuring French actors Vincent Cassel and Sandrine Kiberlain.

Mishani has received major prizes including the Martin Beck Award in Sweden and the Bernstein Prize in Israel.

Alongside his literary achievements, Mishani is a translator and a scholar of detective fiction. He also serves as Head of the Creative Writing Program in the Department of Literature at Tel Aviv University. He lives in Tel Aviv with his wife and two children.

At the IIAS, he will pursue a study and fresh English translation of the Disputation of Mallorca (1286), a little-studied Latin text recording a debate between a Genoese merchant and four Jews in Palma de Mallorca, offering new insights into Jewish-Christian encounters in the medieval Mediterranean.

๐Œ๐ข๐ซ๐ฃ๐š๐ฆ ๐‘๐š๐ฃ๐ง๐ž๐ซ (๐๐š๐ซ-๐ˆ๐ฅ๐š๐ง ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ) is an expert in Jewish art and visual culture in Central and Eastern Europe, with particular focus on the 19th and 20th centuries, the Holocaust and its aftermath, and the early works of Marc Chagall and the Russian avant-garde.

During her fellowship,๐ฌ๐ก๐ž ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ๐ž ๐š ๐›๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐€ ๐…๐ข๐ง-๐๐ž-๐’๐ขรจ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž โ€œ๐€๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐†๐ก๐ž๐ญ๐ญ๐จโ€: ๐Ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐„๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐„๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ง โ€˜๐‰๐ž๐ฐ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐€๐ซ๐ญโ€™, presenting her findings from extensive archival research across Europe and the Americas.
