Reb Shimon Bar Yochai requested that the day of his passing be observed as a "Hillula" (celebration) — hence, Lag BaOmer is celebrated with joy, music, dancing, bonfires, and pilgrimages, especially to his grave in Meron.
After criticizing the Roman government, Reb Shimon was forced to flee for his life. He and his son Elazar hid in a cave in Peki’in (Northern Israel) for 13 years. According to tradition, they were sustained by a carob tree and a spring of water that miraculously appeared.
