Edmond de Rothschild watched helplessly as pogroms swept the Russian Empire. His spiritual beliefs, coupled with the desperate state of global Jewry, led him to pour his time and resources into Palestine, the ancestral home of his people.

By 1900, Rothschild’s network of 21 settlements comprised more than 70% of Jewish-owned land in Palestine.

He did not live long enough to see the fulfillment of the Jewish prayers he and his family had long recited anticipating a Jewish return to Zion.

But when, at 4 p.m. on May 14, 1948, David Ben Gurion declared the birth of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv, he would do so at 16 Rothschild Blvd.

Israeli troops have captured a strategic mountain in southern Lebanon with the Crusader-built Beaufort Castle on top of it. |

This is their deepest entry into Lebanon in more than 25 years, according to the military.

The area, known as Beaufort Ridge near the city of Nabatiyeh, was taken after several days of heavy fighting and airstrikes in nearby villages. Israeli forces were fighting Hezbollah fighters in the region.

This is seen as a major gain for Israel in the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, which started in early March. Israel and Lebanon have technically been in conflict since 1948 and are currently holding talks in Washington.

The Israeli army also shared a photo showing soldiers at the castle and said they raised the Israeli flag there. Israel had previously controlled this castle between 1982 and 2000.

Antisemites Right and Left - WSJ

To speak plainly about Jew-hatred in one’s own party is hard. It’s also a duty.

An “antisemitism problem” exists on both the left and the right, according to the latest political cliché. Like most clichés, this one contains truth, but its expression sounds like an excuse to keep quiet and do nothing.

Jew-hatred thrives in some precincts more than others, and for reasons nobody fully understands it does so more among the credentialed and allegedly better-educated Americans than it does among the rest. What makes antisemitism in the 2020s so menacing isn’t its ugliness or brutality but its subtlety and intellectual appeal, its expression by gullible journalists and kaffiyeh-wearing postgraduates using big terms they don’t understand: “Zionism,” “genocide,” “occupation.”
