21 Rwandan children received free, life-saving cardiac care this week! 🇷🇼🩺

Behind every procedure is a transformed family. Josiane, the mother of a 10-year-old patient whose heart condition kept him out of school, shared her relief: “It gives me joy knowing that we can access such treatment here in the country.” ❤️

Thanks to advanced cardiac catheterization, a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery, many of these brave kids are recovering rapidly and heading home within just 24 hours. Thank you to Abbott’s Little Heroes program for providing the life-saving Amplatzer devices and bringing smiles to the ward with teddy bears and gifts.

Keeping spirits high, NBA legend Harold Keeling (Project Max) and SACH PR Manager Daniel Campos have been by the children’s sides every step of the way, making sure their hospital experience is filled with warmth and happiness!

The ultimate fuel for our team? Seeing young Rehem, fully recovered, walk right back into the cath lab to hand-deliver a thank-you note to the doctors 💙

It was an honor to welcome the President of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, to Save a Child's Heart during his historic first visit to Israel. The President was accompanied by the First Lady and his Cabinet Ministers, as well as Head of MASHAV, Einat Shlein, Israel's Ambassador to Somaliland Michael Lotem, and Somaliland's Ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Hagi.

Our Executive Director, Simon Fisher, provided the delegation with an overview of our long-standing commitment to pediatric cardiac care in Somaliland, anchored by our collaboration with the Edna Adan University Hospital, Hargeysa. Since treating our first child from Somaliland in 2004, we have provided life-saving heart surgeries to 49 children through 2025. Looking ahead, we are eager to expand this partnership to reach even more children in need.

The President also learned about our comprehensive medical training program and met with five of our doctors-in-training from Nigeria, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, who are gaining specialized expertise to build sustainable cardiac care in their home countries. President Abdullahi reflected on the importance of this humanitarian mission: "This is nothing related to politics, this is human action, human generosity. Hopefully, Somaliland doctors will also be training here so they can save children back in Hargeisa."

The highlight of the visit was the President's meeting with the young patients currently under our care. While we have nine children from Somaliland currently in Israel, the President met with seven of them at the SACH Children’s Home, as two were receiving treatment at the hospital. It was a meaningful opportunity for the President to connect with these children and their mothers, and see firsthand the impact of our work in providing a healthier future for children across the region.

It was a true honor to welcome H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi to Save a Child's Heart. We were privileged to share our ongoing commitment to pediatric cardiac care in Somaliland and, most importantly, to see the President connect with the brave children currently in our care. A meaningful visit for us all.

Three days into our Rwanda mission, the momentum is incredible! 🩺

Working shoulder-to-shoulder with our partners at King Faisal Hospital Rwanda, our joint team has already treated over 15 children, and we are on track to reach 25 by week's end. The entire medical team is consistently staying beyond planned hours, reflecting an extraordinary commitment to ensuring every child receives the urgent care they need.

The success of this mission is driven by deep collaboration. It is a full-circle moment to see former fellow Dr. Gerard Misago working alongside his mentor, Dr. Sagi Assa. They are joined by a powerhouse team: Dr. Sivan Elkarat, Dr. Ziv Friedwald, Nurse Svetlana Katsovich, Technicians Tal Sela and Hila Zana, and current fellow Dr. Jean De Dieu Nsanzimana. Our Executive Director Simon Fisher and PR Manager Daniel Campos Putterman are also on the ground, ensuring every detail of the mission is running smoothly.

We are also proud to have as part of the mission our past fellows Dr. Christine Niyibogora (Anesthesia), Dr. Lise Mumporeze (ICU), and Dr. Yayehyirad Mekonen (Surgery), proving the long-term impact of our training programs.

We are deeply grateful for the support of Israel in Rwanda Ambassador Einat Weiss, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Republic of Rwanda, Yvan Butera, MD, PhD, and from the Ministry of Sports l Rwanda, Nelly Mukazayire. Adding extra heart to the mission, NBA legend Harold Keeling representing Legends of Basketball and Project Max is on-site hosting clinics and bringing smiles to our patients.

And this could not be achieved with out the generous support of Abbott &

Stay tuned as we continue repairing little hearts! 💙
