UNDP Palestinian UNDP's Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP) was established via a UN General Assembly Resolution (33/147) on 20 December 1978.

Leading and responsive development agency working together with the Palestinian people to fulfil their aspiration for sustainable human development based on self-determination, equality and freedom It called upon the United Nations Development Programme, in consultation with specialized agencies and other organizations within the United Nations to intensify its efforts: ‘To improve the economic and social conditions of the Palestinian people by identifying their social and economic needs and by establishing concrete projects to that end’. In line with its mandate, UNDP/PAPP continues to play an important role in supporting socio-economic development in the occupied Palestinian territory. Since the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in 1994, UNDP/PAPP, in partnership with public, private institutions, civil society and donors- has invested over one billion Dollars in support of the Palestinian people. بمناسبة اليوم العالمي للمرأة الريفية، نظّم برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي (UNDP)، بالشراكة مع مركز الديمقراطية وحقوق العاملين (DWRC)، معرضاً في غزة بمشاركة 30 امرأة وشاباً من أصحاب المشاريع، عرضوا منتجات محلية شملت الأغذية، والحرف اليدوية، والتطريز، والمنتجات الزراعية، والملابس والإكسسوارات.

وأتاح المعرض للمشاركين فرصة للتعريف بمنتجاتهم ومهاراتهم، وتسليط الضوء على أهمية دعم المشاريع المحلية والحفاظ على مصادر الدخل في ظل التحديات الاقتصادية الصعبة التي تواجهها غزة.

وتأتي هذه المبادرة ضمن جهود أوسع لتعزيز قدرات 120 امرأة وشاباً، ودعم المشاريع الصغيرة، وتوسيع فرص توليد الدخل.

وتندرج المبادرة ضمن برنامج الاستثمار من أجل تعزيز القدرة على الصمود (IPR IV) الذي ينفذه برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي، بدعم من الحكومة الألمانية عبر بنك التنمية الألماني (KfW)، للمساهمة في تعزيز صمود الاقتصاد المحلي ودعم تعافي المجتمعات في غزة.

On the International Day of Rural Women, UNDP, in partnership with the Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center (DWRC), organized an exhibition in Gaza showcasing locally produced food, handicrafts, embroidery, agricultural products, clothing and accessories from 30 women and young entrepreneurs.

Beyond showcasing their products, the exhibition provided an opportunity to highlight local skills, entrepreneurship and the importance of sustaining livelihoods amid Gaza’s severe economic challenges.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the capacities of 120 women and young people, support small businesses and expand income-generating opportunities.

This initiative is part of UNDP’s Investment Programme for Resilience (IPR IV), supported by the Government of Germany through KfW, contributing to local economic resilience and community recovery in Gaza.

مبارك للطلاب المهندسين الفائزين في مسابقة "بيت المستقبل الفلسطيني"، التي نُظّمت ضمن فعاليات منتدى الإسكان الفلسطيني الأول، بالشراكة بين وزارة الأشغال العامة والإسكان وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي، في ظل تزايد الاحتياجات السكنية في مختلف أنحاء فلسطين، من الضفة الغربية إلى قطاع غزة والقدس الشرقية.

يشكّل المنتدى مساحة لتبادل الأفكار والخبرات حول مستقبل الإسكان في فلسطين، واستكشاف حلول عملية للتحديات التي يواجهها القطاع، من إعادة الإعمار وتطوير السياسات الإسكانية إلى تعزيز فرص التمويل وتوظيف التقنيات الحديثة والحلول المستدامة.

Congratulations to the winning engineering students of the “Palestinian Future Home Competition”, held as part of the First Palestinian Housing Forum, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and UNDP, amid increasingly urgent housing needs across Palestine, from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

The Forum provides a platform for exchanging ideas and expertise on the future of housing in Palestine and exploring practical solutions to the challenges facing the sector, from reconstruction and housing policy development to expanding financing opportunities and harnessing modern technologies and sustainable solutions.

By bringing together national institutions, technical experts, the private sector and financing partners, the Forum creates opportunities for new partnerships and innovative ideas that contribute to developing affordable, resilient and sustainable housing solutions that respond to Palestinians’ needs and priorities.

Despite immense challenges in Gaza, UNDP continues to work side by side with national institutions and partners to address urgent needs and lay the groundwork for Palestinian-owned recovery.

الصمود لا يعني فقط القدرة على مواجهة الظروف الصعبة، بل يشمل أيضاً الدعم والروابط والمساحات المجتمعية التي تساعد الناس على تجاوز التحديات بكرامة.

في شهر التوعية بسرطان الثدي، نسلّط الضوء على أهمية الدعم المجتمعي للنساء المصابات بالسرطان، بما يشمل الدعم النفسي والاجتماعي، وإعادة التأهيل، والتواصل مع نظيراتهن، والوصول إلى المعلومات الموثوقة.

فمن خلال برنامج الاستثمار من أجل تعزيز القدرة على الصمود (IPR)، المموّل من حكومة ألمانيا عبر بنك التنمية الألماني (KfW)، يتعاون برنامج الأمم المتحدة الانمائي مع جمعية دنيا لاورام النساء على تعزيز مساحة مخصصة تتيح للنساء التواصل والحصول على الدعم والمشاركة بفاعلية في مجتمعاتهن.

ويأتي هذا العمل ضمن جهود برنامج الأمم المتحدة الانمائي الأوسع لتعزيز المساحات المجتمعية الشاملة، والروابط الاجتماعية، وقدرة المجتمعات الفلسطينية على الصمود.

Resilience is also about the support, connections and community spaces that help people navigate difficult circumstances with dignity.

This Pink October, we highlight the importance of community-based support for women affected by cancer, from psychosocial support and rehabilitation to peer connections and access to reliable information.

Through the Investment Programme for Resilience IPR, funded by the Government of Germany through KfW, UNDP is partnering with Dunya Women’s Cancer Association to strengthen a dedicated space where women can connect, access support and participate in their communities.

This is part of our broader work to strengthen inclusive community spaces, social connections and resilience across Palestinian communities.

400ألف متر مكعب من النفايات الصلبة المتراكمة أُزيلت ونُقلت من سوق فراس التاريخي، الواقع في قلب مدينة غزة.

تمثل إزالة هذه النفايات خطوة مهمة في مواجهة أزمة النفايات الصلبة في غزة والحد من مخاطرها على الصحة العامة، إلى جانب تهيئة الظروف لإعادة أحد أكبر المراكز التجارية في مدينة غزة إلى العمل، حيث سيتمكن أكثر من 200 تاجر وبائع من العودة إلى السوق، بما يسهم في استعادة الحركة التجارية ودعم الاقتصاد المحلي.

وتأتي إعادة إحياء سوق فراس في إطار جهود برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي الأوسع للتعافي المبكر، والرامية إلى استعادة سبل العيش والنشاط الاقتصادي، وإعادة تأهيل الأماكن التي تعتمد عليها المجتمعات المحلية في حياتها اليومية، في وقت لا تزال فيه غزة تواجه تحديات كبيرة في إدارة النفايات الصلبة.

شكراً لحكومتي ألمانيا وبلجيكا، وللصندوق الإنساني للأرض الفلسطينية المحتلة، وللاتحاد الأوروبي من خلال المديرية العامة للحماية المدنية الأوروبية وعمليات المساعدات الإنسانية، على دعمهم الذي ساهم في جعل هذا العمل ممكناً.

Nearly 400,000 cubic metres of accumulated solid waste have been cleared and transferred from the historic Firas Market in the heart of Gaza City.

The clearance marks an important step in addressing Gaza’s solid waste crisis and reducing associated public health risks, while creating the conditions to bring one of Gaza City’s largest commercial hubs back into use. More than 200 merchants and vendors can return, helping reconnect local supply chains.

Reviving Firas Market is part of UNDP’s broader early recovery efforts to restore livelihoods, economic activity and the spaces communities rely on every day.
Yet Gaza’s solid waste crisis remains immense.

Since October 2023, Gaza’s productive capacity has been severely damaged, markets disrupted and the cost of goods has risen.

Yet women like Nidaa, Hanaa and Hanin continue to find ways forward , adapting their businesses, rebuilding lost livelihoods, learning new skills and supporting their families.

As part of its response and early recovery efforts, UNDP supports micro, small and medium enterprises with grants, equipment and skills development, while working with Palestinian institutions and local economic actors to restore productive capacity and create the conditions for economic recovery.

“كان بيتي ومصدر رزقي. وكان يخدم الجميع، الأغنياء والفقراء.”

هكذا يتذكر موسى سوق فراس، الذي كان يوماً أحد الأسواق الرئيسية في مدينة غزة، ومقصداً لمختلف شرائح المجتمع. لكن مع اندلاع الحرب، وانهيار خدمات جمع النفايات الصلبة وتدمير السوق، تحوّل المكان إلى مكب للنفايات.

وبدعم من ألمانيا، والصندوق الانساني للأرض الفلسطينية المحتلة (oPt HF)، والاتحاد الأوروبي من خلال المديرية العامة للحماية المدنية الاوروبية وعمليات المساعدات الإنسانية (ECHO)، وبلجيكا، تمكّن برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي وشركاؤه من إزالة أكثر من 365 ألف متر مربع من النفايات الصلبة، بما يعادل 226 ألف طن، من السوق.

لكن هذه الجهود لا تزال بحاجة إلى دعم مستمر. فاستمرار توفير الآليات والمعدات الثقيلة، إلى جانب تهيئة الظروف اللازمة لإزالة الأنقاض والنفايات المتبقية بأمان، أمر أساسي لإعادة سوق فراس إلى العمل، والمساهمة في استعادة سبل العيش والنشاط الاقتصادي في قلب مدينة غزة.

“It was my home, my source of income. It used to serve everyone: the rich and the poor.”

That’s how Musa remembers Firas Market, once one of Gaza City’s iconic marketplaces. Then came the war. As solid waste collection collapsed and the market was destroyed, the site became a dumping ground.

With support from Germany, the occupied Palestinian territory Humanitarian Fund (oPt HF), the European Union through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), and Belgium, UNDP and partners have removed over 365,000 square metres (226,000 tonnes) of solid waste from the market.

But these gains remain fragile. Sustained access to heavy machinery and equipment, alongside the conditions needed to safely remove remaining rubble and waste, is critical to bring Firas Market back into use and help restore livelihoods and economic activity in the heart of Gaza City.

تُعد جودة الهواء جزءاً أساسياً من صحة المجتمعات وسلامة البيئة، فمن خلال رصدها وقياسها، يمكن تحويل البيانات إلى معرفة تساعد المجتمعات وصنّاع القرار على فهم التحديات البيئية واتخاذ خطوات أكثر استدامة.

وللمساهمة في ذلك، يقود شباب وشابات مبادرة تطوعية لإنشاء أول شبكة مجتمعية شاملة لرصد جودة الهواء في فلسطين AirAware، بدعم من برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي عبر برنامج المنح الصغيرة التابع لمرفق البيئة العالمي، وبالشراكة مع سلطة جودة البيئة وجمعية بذور للتنمية والثقافة.

وتضم الشبكة حساسات موزعة في نابلس وطولكرم وجنين، تجمع بيانات لحظية عن جودة الهواء، ستُتاح للمجتمعات من خلال موقع إلكتروني وتطبيق هاتفي قيد التطوير.

ومن خلال إتاحة هذه البيانات، تسعى المبادرة إلى تعزيز الوعي بجودة الهواء وتمكين المجتمعات من فهم واقعها البيئي والمساهمة في حماية البيئة.

Air quality is an essential part of community health and environmental safety. By monitoring and measuring it, data can be transformed into knowledge that helps communities and policymakers understand environmental challenges and take more sustainable steps.

To contribute to this effort, young men and women are leading a voluntary initiative to establish Palestine’s first comprehensive community-based air quality monitoring network, AirAware, supported by UNDP through the GEF Small Grants Programme, in partnership with the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority and the Seeds for Development and Culture Association.

The network includes sensors distributed across Nablus, Tulkarem, and Jenin governorates, collecting real-time air-quality data from different locations, which will be made accessible to communities through a dedicated website and mobile application currently under development.

By making air-quality information more accessible, the initiative seeks to enhance awareness of air quality, empower communities to understand their environmental reality, and contribute to environmental protection.

إن دعم قدرة الأعمال الفلسطينية على المنافسة والنمو يتطلب العمل على ما هو أبعد من دعم المنشآت بشكل منفرد، ليشمل تعزيز المؤسسات والمعايير والروابط مع الأسواق التي تتيح لها الوصول إلى فرص جديدة والتوسع.

Strengthening Palestinian businesses means working beyond individual enterprises—on the institutions, standards and market connections they need to compete and grow.

Through its Economic Resilience Programme (MASARAT), UNDP is working with Palestinian institutions and the private sector to strengthen the systems that enable Palestinian businesses to compete and reach new markets. The Palestine Standards Institution’s (PSI) recognition by Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) for Halal certificates issued in Palestine marks important progress—creating a more streamlined pathway to the Malaysian market and opportunities for wider market access.

This progress also contributes to broader efforts to connect Palestinian MSMEs with regional and global markets, including through the OIC Single Market Initiative and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Palestine. By strengthening institutions alongside businesses, UNDP is helping address barriers to trade and create a more enabling environment for Palestinian products to reach new markets.

Congratulations to PSI on this important achievement, and appreciation to the Federation of Palestinian Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, the Ministry of National Economy, the Ministry of Industry, the Representative Office of Switzerland in the oPt and the Government of the Netherlands for their partnership and support.
