Dr. Sugarman is a family physician in Washington, D.C. She received a B.A. cm laude in general studies from Harvard College and earned an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College. She has a Diplomate from the National Board of Medical Examiners and from the American Board of Family Practice. In the past, Dr. Sugarman served as a family doctor at the Lighthouse AIDS Clinic in Rehovot, Israel, where a majority of the patients were from Africa. Most recently, she worked at the Community of Hope clinic in Washington, D.C. which serves patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Dr. Sugarman has decades of experience as a human rights advocate working with torture survivors and detainees. In addition to her work with Doctors for Camp Closure, she has worked in cooperation with Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) International, Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma, and the Program for Survivors of Torture & Severe Trauma at Northern Virginia Family Services. Dr. Sugarman is an expert on medicolegal collaboration and refugee health.

Check out this blog post by medical student and PHR Student Advisory Board Member Rebecca Leff regarding the importance of not separating migrant children from their parents in light of the recent order to release children who have been held for more than 20 days in the detention centers run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
"I implore the leaders of the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to release children responsibly with their parents or to a suitable guardian in conjunction with the June 26, 2020 ruling by Judge Dolly M. Gee. Children should be released from ICE detention with their parents immediately. Families belong together."
