A Wicklow man has been jailed for three years at the Central Criminal Court for coercively controlling and falsely imprisoning his former partner.
Mr Justice Paul Burns described it as a “cruel” course of serious offending over a number of months. He said it was an aggravating factor that they were in a relationship. He said the pleas came late but the prosecution accepted they were of some assistance. He noted Smullen’s history of substance abuse and that he had a damaged septum.

The judge noted a probation report said Smullen has limited remorse, engaged in victim blaming and was at a high risk of reoffending. He said Smullen would require a course of intervention post-release.

For the majority, Christmas really is 'the most wonderful time of the year'. But for some people, it can be the most isolating and scary time of year. While it feels like everyone else takes a break to retreat to the warmth and happiness of their homes over the Christmas period, for domestic abuse victims the abuse doesn't stop.
Women experiencing domestic abuse feel very alone and it can be very difficult for a woman to access support during this time – a period when her abusive partner may be spending more time at home and monitoring her behaviour more closely than ever.
It is also vital that friends and family reach out and support a loved one if they are concerned. Finding a safe place to talk and offering non-judgmental support is key.
Talking to someone may be her first step towards accessing information and support.

From all our staff we would like to wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas x
