DPOs and Authentic Voice
Did You Know? Nothing About Us Without Us Means DPO Leadership.
Did you know there is a vital distinction between traditional disability service providers and a Disabled Persons Organisation (DPO)?
Under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), a DPO must be led, governed, and directed by a majority of disabled people themselves.
The Issue: For decades, decisions about disabled people’s lives, services, and policies were made by non-disabled organisations or service providers without direct representative governance.
The Solution: True consultation. Government bodies and local authorities must consult directly with DPOs to ensure policies reflect genuine lived experience.

Footpaths and Local Infrastructure

Did You Know? A Cracked Footpath Is a Blocked Route.

Did you know that everyday street hazards—like missing drop kerbs, steep gradients, and poorly placed street furniture—can completely cut off access to a town center?

Under the Social Model, someone using a mobility scooter or pushing a pram isn't stuck because of their equipment—they are stopped by poor infrastructure design and maintenance.

The Issue: Uneven pavement, parking on footpaths, and absent dished kerbs turn simple errands into hazardous navigation courses.

The Solution: Active travel routes planned with Universal Design principles. Dished kerbs, clear footpaths, and accessible crossings allow everyone to navigate their community safely and independently.

We are very excited to be letting you all know that the ONSIDE digital Inclusion Programme is back as ONSIDE Evolution.

Our own Mo Farah and Pippa Black are working away to bring digital inclusion to hundreds of Disabled People in Donegal over the next three years.

ONSIDE Evolution is a cross-border project funded through the EU PEACEPLUS Programme, supporting disabled people aged 16 and over to reduce digital and social isolation, build confidence and skills, strengthen community connections, and become more active in their communities.

Participants can benefit from:

A free tablet, subject to programme participation requirements.

A six-week digital skills programme focused on digital confidence, independence, inclusion and online safety.

Disability Equality and Active Citizenship training to help participants understand their rights and participate more actively in community life.

Opportunities to connect with local Disabled Persons’ Organisations (DPOs) and community activities.

Public Transport and Spontaneous Travel

Did You Know? Freedom to Travel Shouldn't Require 24 Hours' Notice.

Did you know that many disabled people in Ireland cannot simply buy a train or bus ticket and travel spontaneously?

Under the Social Model, a blind traveler or wheelchair user isn't restricted by their disability—they are restricted by unstaffed stations, broken lifts, and requirements to book advance assistance hours or days in advance.

The Issue: Needing advance clearance or confirmation just to take public transit limits access to employment, education, and social life.

The Solution: Turnkey accessible transport. Fully accessible fleets, level-boarding infrastructure, and reliably maintained facilities make independent travel a standard right for everyone.

The Social Model vs. The Medical Model
Did You Know? Disability Is Environment, Not Impairment.
Did you know that the Social Model of Disability separates a person’s medical condition from the barriers created by society?
Under the Medical Model, a disabled person is viewed as needing to be "fixed" or adapt to an inaccessible world. Under the Social Model, the focus shifts entirely to removing the obstacles—attitudinal, physical, and digital—that exclude people from daily life.
The Issue: When society views disability purely through a medical lens, accessibility is treated as a secondary charity favor rather than a fundamental human right.
The Solution: Rights-based inclusion. When public spaces, transport, and services are designed accessibly from the start, society stops disabling people.

🤔 Did You Know? Disability Starts at the Front Door.

Did you know that the majority of existing homes in Ireland are built in a way that creates immediate barriers for disabled people?

Under the Social Model, a person who uses a wheelchair or mobility frame is not disabled by their body—they are disabled by steps, narrow doorways, and inaccessible bathrooms.

The Issue: When housing is not built using Universal Design principles, disabled people are often forced to rely on long-winded grant applications and structural alterations just to navigate their own homes.

The Solution: True accessibility means building homes that are inclusive by design from day one. Accessible housing allows everyone to live independently, age in place, and welcome disabled friends and family into their homes without barriers.
