Intersectionality is the term used to refer to how different aspects of a person’s identity interact and overlap. For example, disability, age, race, gender, and sexual orientation. Each person’s experience will be unique.

The term ‘intersectionality’ was first used by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989.

🤔 Did You Know? Wexford's Disabled Community.

Did you know that a significant percentage of the total population in Ireland identifies as disabled?

According to the most recent official figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO, Census 2022), approximately 22% of the population—over 1.1 million people—reported experiencing a long-lasting condition or disability to some extent.
That means one in every five people you meet, work with, or see in the street is a disabled person.

Disabled people are not a tiny minority. We are part of the core fabric of our local community in Wexford, and our access needs are a fundamental right, not an optional extra.

Identity-first language
With identity first language the disability is placed before the person. So, using this language you would say ‘disabled person’ rather than ‘person with a disability’. Many disabled people prefer this language as they see their disability as an important part of their identity in the same way someone might refer to their nationality, sexual orientation or religion. For people who prefer identity-first language they don’t consider their disability to be something separate from them.

Some examples of identity-first language:

Autistic person
Wheelchair user
Disabled students

Equality
Equality means sameness between things. What this means in different contexts and when used by different people varies significantly, such as equality of treatment, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome.

Sometimes, equality can mean treating people the same regardless of difference.

At other times, it can mean seeking to achieve the same outcomes or provide the same opportunities. This can mean treating people differently in order to treat them fairly. An example of this meaning are included in Equality Acts worldwide. This requires employers to treat disabled people differently in some situations by making reasonable adjustments to allow them to achieve the same outcomes as their non-disabled peers.
