The GenCare research project based at the CDLP is looking for young disabled people to be co-researchers in the project! Co-researchers will be young disabled people, age 18 – 24, living in Ireland.

In this research it is very important that young disabled people are involved in conversations about what care and support should look like in the future but that we also learn from older disabled people about what happened before, what works and what doesn’t work. To make sure this happens the co-researchers will be involved in all aspects of the research from finalising the project plans to interviewing participants and telling people about the results.

Please share widely with anyone who might be interested! Find out more about the project and getting involved as a co-researcher on the website at https://gencareresearch.ie/get-involved/

Last week Wexford DPO attended the Social Inclusion Forum in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Our Chair, Ruth Fitzmaurice, presented the finding from the SIF Regional Workshops regarding Disability.

The delegation highlighted the devastating impact of poverty, the need for income adequacy and a shift away from the subsidisation of the private sector to deliver essential public services.

At the event the Taoiseach launched the Government’s new Anti-Poverty Strategy Roadmap for Social Inclusion 2026-2030, which reiterates the target of the last plan to reduce consistent poverty to 2% or less and to make Ireland one of the most socially inclusive societies in the EU

What has disability got to do with human rights?
Disability is a natural part of our human diversity, and one that must be respected and supported in all its forms.

The hundreds of thousands of disabled people in Ireland have the right to participate with dignity in everyday life—at home, school, work or in their community. These rights are protected in national and international laws.

UNCRPD Living Independently (Article 19)
Article 19 protects the right of disabled people to live independently and be included in the community. This means disabled people must have the same choice and control as non-disabled people regarding where they live and who they live with.

It also requires access to a wide range of support services, including personal assistance, to support full inclusion and prevent isolation.
