They say it takes a village to raise a child.....In Duncannon, we are delighted to prove that it took an entire community to raise a blue flag.
On Friday 19th June, we were delighted to hold the official flag raising on Duncannon Beach.
On the day Project Manager Eoin Kinsella thanked Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for the co-funding of the project under the European Innovation Partnership and the operational group members which included Teagasc advisory & Research, Tirlan, Bord Bia, Ifa & Geoff Barry Agricultural Consultants
Emphasised on the day, was the role that collaboration plays to improve water quality and that community engagement is imperative during the process from schools to local community groups like Duncannon Tidy Towns & Duncannon Village.
Investment in wastewater infrastructure by Uisce Eireann and Wexford County Council in recent years has proved pivotal for improving water quality within the Waterford Harbour Estuary.
A final thank you went to the the 37 local farmers who supported the EIP project from day one and they were recognised for their buy-in, investment in mitigation measures and collaboration with Wexford County Council.
Mr. Kinsella finally emphasised the vital importance of supporting not just farmers but community groups, schools and dwelling owners as Irelands moves forward to try and improve water quality. The EIP-agri model has proven a huge success and continued investment by all departments was vital.
Almost 20 years in the waiting, Duncannon has now regained its blue flag status.
