Last Thursday at 12:50pm, Mayo Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by An Garda Síochána to assist a group of hikers on Nephin after one member of the party suffered a fall while descending the mountain.
A hill party was immediately dispatched to the casualty's location, and assistance was requested from Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter R118. The casualty was assessed and treated at the scene before being safely evacuated from the mountain by R118.
We would like to thank the crew of Rescue 118 for their professionalism and assistance in bringing this incident to a successful conclusion. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the Mangan family for their invaluable help in transporting MMRT members during the operation.
We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

St. Valentine's epic on Mweelrea Mountain range.
MMRT got a call at 5:30pm yesterday to assist two hikers in difficulty on a ridge below the summit of Mweelrea. The couple had set out to walk the ridge above the Doolough Lakes. One of them took a fall, hurt her hip, and as she was unable to continue they took shelter in their small tent. The weather was seriously deteriorating and daylight was fading so they wisely called 999 for mountain rescue assistance.
Our first responders made their way to the mountain and located the couple at 10:00pm.
They were followed by a stretcher party. Both hikers were assessed and treated, and in challenging conditions were safely evacuated off the mountain, one by stretcher and one walked with assistance, to awaiting MMRT vehicles.
MMRT were stood down at 4:00am this morning.
We wish this couple a very good recovery from their injuries and ordeal.

Great Training Day on Saturday:
Members of the Mayo Mountain Rescue team enjoyed a busy weekend practising their advanced remote first aid skills.
This training is vital to ensure that the team are prepared in the event of serious injury and multi trauma which can happen anytime on our mountains.
We had Padraig O'hora as our special guest. Padraig is preparing for his ascent of Everest in May and is ensuring that he too has the right skills to deal with illness or injury during the climb. We wish Padraig a safe and successful trip.

Incident on Croagh Patrick:
A female walker suffered a fall on the lower cone of Croagh Patrick yesterday afternoon. Members of her walking group called 999 for assistance, tended to her and helped her walk, with difficulty, as far as the shoulder where thay met our stretcher party. We had been called out by AGS at 1;30pm. Following assessment and treatment we stretchered her off the mountain to the carpark in Murrisk.
Well done to her friends for taking such good care of her. We wish this woman a very speedy recovery.
Our team was stood down at 4;30pm.
