⛰️ Steep Ground Training | Recruitment Reminder 🚨

Yesterday, members of Mayo Mountain Rescue took to the hills for some steep ground training, putting skills, teamwork and techniques into practice in challenging terrain.

Training like this is an important part of maintaining the skills and confidence needed to operate safely and effectively in the mountains when people need our help.

🚨 Mayo Mountain Rescue Callout🚨

At 17:35 yesterday evening, Mayo Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by the National Ambulance Service (NAS) to assist a male hiker who had suffered a fall while descending.

Rescue 118 was also tasked to the incident, with additional support provided by our colleagues Irish Coast Guard Westport Unit.

The casualty was successfully airlifted from the mountain and Mayo Mountain Rescue Team stood down at 19:30.

We would like to thank all agencies involved for their assistance and coordination during the incident.

🚨 Latest Callouts

On Monday 7th September MMRT were tasked by the National Ambulance Service (NAS) to assist a 25-year-old hiker who had gotten into difficulty while descending Mweelrea.

A member of the team guided the casualty towards the roadside where he was met by more members of MMRT and NAS. There he was assessed and treated for minor injuries. MMRT were stood down at 20:30.

On Tuesday 9th September, MMRT received a request from NAS to assist a 74-year-old hiker on Slievemore. Achill Island Coast Guard took the tasking and successfully assisted the casualty off the mountain, where he was subsequently treated by NAS.

We would like to wish both casualties a speedy recovery and thank all the agencies and personnel involved in both incidents for their assistance and cooperation. 🤝

🚨 A demanding 48 hours for Mayo Mountain Rescue 🚨
The team have responded to three mountain incidents over the past few days, involving two separate mountains and multiple casualties.

📍 Croagh Patrick – Monday
Tasked by An Garda Síochána, our team responded to a female hiker who had fallen while descending Croagh Patrick. The casualty was assessed and subsequently stretchered safely from the mountain.
A special thank you to Frank from the Croagh Patrick Paths Team, who contacted the emergency services and stayed with the casualty until our team arrived. Your actions made a real difference. 👏

📍 Nephin – Yesterday evening
While most people were winding down for the evening, our team were tasked by An Garda Síochána to assist a male hiker on Nephin who required medical assistance. A first response party made their way to the casualty, and he was subsequently stretchered safely from the mountain.

📍 Croagh Patrick – At the same time
As the Nephin callout was ongoing, another party from the team were responding to a female hiker on Croagh Patrick who also required medical assistance. Our second stretcher team was deployed, and the casualty was safely evacuated from the mountain.

We wish all three casualties a speedy and full recovery. ❤️

Over the course of the weekend, Mayo Mountain Rescue Team responded to two separate incidents involving walkers in difficulty on some of Mayo’s best-known mountains.

**Saturday 15th August – Croagh Patrick**

MMRT was tasked by An Garda Síochána to assist a walker who had encountered difficulties while descending Croagh Patrick.

Our team responded and worked to assist the walker safely from the mountain.

**Monday 17th August – Slievemore**

Just two days later, MMRT was again tasked by An Garda Síochána, this time to assist a walker who had sustained a lower-leg injury while descending Slievemore.

Given the nature of the injury, a stretcher evacuation was required. Rescue 118 were requested to assist but due to inclement weather conditions they were unable to land. Achill Island Coast Guard were subsequently requested to assist due to the extent of the injury, the casualty was safely evacuated by stretcher and transferred into the care of a National Ambulance Service crew. Well done to the Achill Island Coast Guard team for a successful rescue!
