This week is Invisible Disabilities Week.
An estimated 1 billion people (one in 7) living with disabilities worldwide face many barriers to inclusion in many key aspects of society.
As a result, people with disabilities don't enjoy access to society on an equal basis with others, which includes areas of transportation, employment, and education, as well as social and political participation.
👀 Please, take some time to read some facts:
- It's estimated that 80% of people with disabilities live in developing countries.
- 70M people need a wheelchair. Only 5-15% have access to one.
- Disability disproportionately affects women, older people, and poor people.
- It's estimated that some 93M children live with a moderate or severe disability.
- 1/2 of people with disabilities can't afford health care.
- People with disabilities have the same general healthcare needs as others, but they are:
· 2X more likely to find health care providers' skills and facilities inadequate;
· 4X more likely to be treated badly in the health care system;
· 50% more likely to suffer catastrophic health expenditure. These out-of-pocket healthcare payments can push a family into poverty.
💡 Tomorrow, we’re sharing a powerful new article on our blog; all about the reality of requesting workplace accommodations, the difference between visible and invisible disabilities, and why true inclusion starts with belief, not assumptions.
