📣A call to action. This is the time to step up.

This week, a CNN investigation revealed a pornographic website where sexual violence was committed against men’s sleeping partners. On this site and in group chats, perpetrators shared recordings of these assaults and “tips” on dosages for drugging their partners.

The site had 62 million visits in just one month.

This is hard to hear. But it’s also a moment to reflect on what kind of men we want to be.

❓️In light of this, White Ribbon invites men to reflect on “power.” How do you see power? How do you get power? How do you demonstrate power?

The violence highlighted is an example of “power over”, that involves dominating and controlling others for one’s own benefit in order to feel powerful.

👉 “Power to” reminds us that all individuals have the
ability to make positive changes in their spheres of influence. It involves reflecting on your own behaviours in your relationships, family, workplace, and community, and standing up to injustices when you encounter them.

It is recognising the power you hold to change your behaviours, so they contribute to gender equality.

👉 “Power with” involves joining with others to challenge harms that may not directly affect you. This can look like supporting other men to reflect on unconscious behaviours and listening to and learning from the experiences of women in your life.

Supporting women and taking action as an ally is a form of “power with.”

❌️ Think about the power you have to reject “power over” in all its forms.

✔️ Choose to build “power with” and “power to,” rooted in allyship, accountability, and love.

🌏 Choose to create a world where gender-based violence has no place.

Why do we focus on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and not “all” violence?

The White Ribbon team is often asked why our work focuses specifically on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), rather than all forms of violence.

While we reject all forms of violence, our focus on Gender-based violence (GBV) allows us to better understand its root causes, and, more importantly, how to prevent it.

By focusing on GBV, we can:

👉 Adress it’s root causes: GBV is rooted in gender inequality and in the use of violence to maintain this unequal power, and understanding this helps us tackle the problem at its source.

👉 Challenge Harmful beliefs: We work to deconstruct ideas that allow violence to continue, like the belief that men have the right to control or physically punish their partners.

👉 Focus on specific dynamics: GBV has distinct patterns that need to be approached with different strategies. For example, we can address online spaces that promote harmful relationship ideals and have conversations with men and boys about what healthy relationships look like.

As professor Michael Flood explains:

"Violence against women has specific dynamics that should be the focus of specific attention. For example, while the violence that men experience often occurs in public and by perpetrators who are not known to them, the violence that women experience often occurs in relationships and families and by perpetrators known to them."

Trying to cover all types of violence at once, would weaken the impact of our Campaign against Gender-Based Violence. This way, we can take a more specialised and effective approach, while continuing to recognize and support the work done by other organisations on different forms of violence.

🤝 Together, we can all move closer to a world free from all violence.

Today, Róisín from the White Ribbon Ireland team was lucky enough to present the work of White Ribbon to the Galway Sexual Health Forum.

Too often we work without connecting with others who's goal is the same, and to be able to share the space with other practitioners and advocates for sexual health, LGBTI+ community and violence prevention was a true joy.

👉 Here’s 3 Reasons why we need to Engage men and boys in preventing Gender-Based Violence:

1️. Challenging Gender Norms
Men and boys often grow up with expectations about how they “should” act. Expectations like being tough, in control, or not showing emotion, can create pressure that limits wellbeing and relationships.

The rise of online spaces that increasingly amplify harmful ideas of masculinity is contributing to serious mental health challenges amongst men and boys, which makes it the more urgent the necessity to engage men and boys to create transformative masculinities that promote compassion instead of violence.

2. Men and Boys are key to prevention
While men and boys can also be victims of gender-based violence, research shows they are primarily the perpetrators.

This means prevention work around gender-based violence must include shifting harmful behaviours and attitudes that could lead to these violent outcomes.

3. Building Allyship
Engaging men and boys is key to countering the rising anti-rights and anti-gender movements, which reinforce patriarchal power inequalities and rigid gender norms.

The fact that men remain overrepresented in high-ranking positions and in spaces where laws and policies are made, means they have significant influence over decision-making, reinforcing the need for men and boys to form allyships with women, girls and the LGBTQIA+ community TO CREATE meaningful and lasting change.

💛 In her book, The will to change (2004), Bell Hooks wrote: “Life has shown me that any time a single male dares to transgress patriarchal boundaries in order to love, the lives of women, men, and children are fundamentally changed for the better.”

It is with Bell Hooks words in mind that we believe everyone has a role to play in preventing gender-based violence. It can start from a simple conversation with a friend to hosting an event about GBV in your community.

However you do it, we are here to help you.

Following the workshop we delivered at DKIT recently as part of the 16 days of activism, we are incredibly proud of these three young men!

They have stepped up as Game Changer Ambassadors and organised a fantastic awareness raising event yesterday in DKIT.

Their initiative is helping to shine a vital spotlight not only on the Game Changer Programme but also on the crucial mission of eliminating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in society.

Their commitment to creating awareness and driving positive change is truly inspiring. So proud to call them Game Changers!
