Over 100 people stood together in Lismore today in proud support of the Waterford hill farmers.
We marched from Houlihans petrol station, across the bridge, and into the park beside Lismore Castle , a powerful show of unity from people of all ages. With the sound of the piper leading the way with the Irish flags closely behind and all the group banners and flags held high, the message was clear: communities will stand together when livelihoods are under threat.
We were joined by our friends from a number of different republican groups including the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, Anti-Imperialist Action Ireland, IRSP, Tipperary Independent Republicans, the Sinnott’s Cross Ambush Committee, and many independent supporters who came out in solidarity.
Ger Fitzgerald, one of the farmers directly facing eviction, opened proceedings. His story is a stark example of what’s at stake — with rents being increased by an outrageous 900% by the absentee British landlord, the Duke of Devonshire.
Tom Hennessey of Tipperary delivered a powerful main oration, reflecting on generations of struggle and resilience stretching back hundreds of years. Ger Foran from Kilkenny followed with a deeply moving poem, spoken with real passion and conviction. The day was brought to a close by Jaime Moore, whose songs “Genocide” and “The Weeds on the Grave” left a lasting impression on all who attended.
A huge thank you to every single person who showed up, marched, listened, and supported. Your presence matters.
This is only the beginning. We will not stop until the farmers get the justice they deserve.
