Ireland grows some of the best food in the world, but when it comes to fruit and veg, we’re increasingly reliant on imports for crops we could be growing right here.

GIY welcomes the new Irish Horticulture Grower–Retail Charter and the commitment from major retailers to support fairer, more sustainable relationships with Irish growers. Fair prices, longer-term contracts and clearer promotion of Irish produce are all important steps forward.

But we believe Ireland needs to go further.

Food security depends on growers, and growers need viable businesses, investment and a new generation of people who can see a future in growing food. We also need to help consumers reconnect with Irish, seasonal food and support a horticulture sector that protects our soils, biodiversity and environment.

Through engaging programmes and courses, we deliver enjoyable, hands-on food education that helps learners of all ages connect with fresh, seasonal and delicious food.

It’s apple season in Ireland, which means it’s also that time of year when we repeatedly ask Richard if they’re ready yet.

He’ll pretend to be grumpy about it but we know deep down he enjoys being asked multiple times a day.

Unlike Richard, we like to take the gentle approach of an apple isn’t ready until it’s ready. Richard, however, has a slightly more direct method of give it a tug. If it comes off, it was ready.

We’ve softened his advice for the purpose of this post…

If you’re questioning the readiness of your apple tree, give the apples a gentle lift and twist. If they come away easily, they’re ready. If you have to tug, give it a little more time.

Top tip: Harvest gently and try to avoid bruising your apples if you’re planning to store them.
